  Case Story
Police Issue Alert For Former Inmate
Police have issued a nationwide alert for a man they say killed two people and sexually assaulted a teenager along South Carolina's Grand Strand in less than 24 hours. A former prison inmate who wrote a book about his time in jail, 37-year-old Stephen Stanko, is accused of shooting and killing 74-year-old Henry Lee Turner of Horry County, police said Saturday. Turner's body was discovered early Saturday when witnesses called police about a car in his driveway. The car belonged to a Murrells Inlet woman who was killed Friday morning. Georgetown County Police are seeking Stanko in the strangulation death of Laura Ling, a 43-year-old librarian with whom Stanko shared a home. Early Friday, a teenager told police she had been sexually assaulted by Stanko. Stanko and Turner knew each other, but it was not clear what their relationship was, Horry County police spokesman Andy Christenson said. Police think Stanko took Turner's black 1996 Mazda B2300 pickup, with S.C. license 709 PYJ. Investigators said Stanko is armed and dangerous. Alerts are running on highway message boards along the S.C. coast. He is 6 feet, 3 inches tall, 192 pounds.

  Lost Job, Strange Interests
On Monday, Stanko was fired from his job after one month as a salesman for Stucco Supply in Myrtle Beach, said Jeff Kendall, Stucco Supply's general manager. Kendall said Stanko was unreliable but a smooth talker who was always well dressed and upfront about his time in prison and about several convictions in the Charleston area. Stanko was released from a Ridgeville prison in July after serving 8½ years of a 10-year sentence for kidnapping in Berkeley County.  Stanko co-wrote "Living in Prison: A History of the Correctional System" while in prison with the help of two professors. -AP Sheriff Lane Cribb said a search of Stanko's residence pointed to a troubling interest. "We found a lot of information about serial killers," Cribb said. "He just seems to be real interested in serial killers, and he started out heading that way," Cribb said, referring to the crime spree.
