  Case Story
Police Believe Transient Committed Brutal Murder
Federal authorities say they are searching nationwide for a mentally disturbed transient who brutally stabbed a 29-year-old woman. Police say Amanda Bateman was driving from Chandler, Oklahoma to her parent's home in Franklin, Tennessee when she picked up a hitchhiker on I-40 near Memphis. Amanda left home on Sunday evening, March 20, 2005, and police say she called her thirteen year old sister around 12:30 a.m. from Memphis to say she had picked up a hitchhiker. According to authorities, Amanda called her parents' home again around 2 a.m. and said she would be there by 5 a.m. When Amanda's father woke up around 6 a.m., he was worried because she hadn't arrived. The family called her cell phone, but there was no answer. They then called the Tennessee Highway Patrol to see if any accidents had been reported on I-40. There hadn't.

  Body Found In State Park
On Tuesday, March 22, Amanda's 2000 Dodge Neon was found abandoned near Lake Ray Hubbard in the Dallas, Texas area. FBI officials say it contained traces of blood and evidence of injury.  Then, on March 23, 2005, the FBI made a gruesome discovery. The body of a woman was found in Natchez Trace State Park by a woman and her children riding horseback in the park in Henderson County, Tennessee. After killing Amanda, police belive McCauley took off in her car with her cell phone. Amanda's father, David Phillips, tracked down the calls made on his daughter's phone. There were two calls. One was made to a number in Georgia, another near Dallas, Texas.  Investigators believe Bobby Joe McCauley made those calls.

  Charitable Act Turns Deadly
Police say Amanda, who had served in the U.S. Air Force, had a habit of picking up hitchhikers. A devout Christian, she often shared her faith with the people she picked up.
