  Case Story
Corrections Officer Gunned Down at Party
On Dec. 4 2004, New York corrections officer Robert Ross was living it up at a hotel party. But before the night's end, police say someone shot him down. And police say that someone was George Saravanos -- an ex-con who showed up at the party that night too. But police say Saravanos wasn't there  to have a good time. Instead, police believe he headed to the get together with the intent to rob someone. Cops say Ross had a wad of cash with him that night, which could be the reason why Saravanos allegedly did the unthinkable before the night's end. He allegedly pulled a gun on Ross and demanded him to empty his pockets. But things didn't go as planned. Cops say Saravanos had no idea his chosen victim was a quick-witted corrections officer.

Cops Put Saravanos on Most Wanted List
Police say when Ross saw the gun, his reaction wasn't typical to someone who's being held-up. Instead, he allegedly told Saravanos, "You've gotta be kidding me, don't you know who I am?" Police say Ross then lifted up his shirt, revealing a shield. But at that point, investigators think Saravanos didn't care and so he allegedly lowered his aim to shoot Ross in the groin. Party-goers stampeded for the door, but Ross didn't make it out.  While the suspect allegedly didn't get away with any money, he did get away with something priceless -- Robert's life. Police put Saravanos  on New York State's 100 Most Wanted Fugitives list- and launched a nationwide manhunt for him. AMW tipsters told police that Saravanos goes by several names including "Victor Vargas" and "Blaze".

Cops Lock up Dad; AMW puts up Billboard, Fugitive Found
AMW kept the heat on George Saravanos for three years.  Thanks to some loyal AMW tipsters, police got information telling them that Andonas Saravanos was helping his son to hide, and giving him money to help him stay on the run.  Police quickly locked up the elder Saravanos and charged him with harboring a fugitive.  And, on March 17, 2006, America's Most Wanted, with the help of the Outdoor Advertising Association of America erected a huge "wanted" billboard in Queens, New York.  All of that pressure paid off.  With the help of the NYPD, the US Marshal Service, ICE, and amw tipsters, police tracked Saravanos all the way to Ecaudor.  It turns out, Sarvanos had been shot inside a brothel in Ecuador.  Police picked up his trail, and now he's back in New York awaiting trial.
