Case Story |

Lethal Cocktail of Vandalism, Arson, and Abduction |
|
| |
Police in Bloomington, Ill. say Lori Wagner has been through a lot in the past few months. And it may all stem from her friendship with Michael Diekhoff.
Diekhoff is bad news. He's a truck driver out of Indiana. Lori Wagner worked as a dispatcher for a trucking company in Bloomington, Ill. They were friends for several years, but in the fall of 2004, police say Lori broke off the friendship when Diekhoff couldn't handle her dating another man.
Two weeks later, Lori's house was set on fire. Her car has been vandalized with paint and her daughter's car has been targeted as well. Police suspect Diekhoff in all of these incidents. Lori and her family were frightened by a series of threatening phone calls -- Diekhoff has been charged in those. He was arrested and released on bail.

Gone Without A Trace |

On January 5, 2005, neighbors say Diekhoff left his home in Westport, Ind around 10:30 am. He was reportedly depressed and agitated. He was driving his 2001 Ford Super Crew F-150 truck, and police belive he had a loaded high-powered rifle -- complete with scope.
Less than 24 hours later -- and about 240 miles away -- Lori Wagner arrived for her shift at the NuWay Trucking company in Bloomington, Ill. It was 5:30 am on January 6. But Lori never made it in the door that day. When she was late her supervisor became concerned and went out to the parking lot. There he saw Lori's car. Beside her car, her cell phone lay on the ground in the snow.
Lori's co-workers were familiar with Diekhoff because he had made several threatening phone calls to her office. Lori's boss called the McLean County Sheriffs Office and the hunt began -- with US Marshals joining in.
Police have charged Diekhoff with abducting Lori. And her life may be in grave danger, they say. Later that day Diekhoff called his mother to say he was on the road. When she told him police had been looking for him and asking about a missing person, police say he admitted that he was with that "missing girl."

Deja Vu Abduction |
|
| |
In August 1987 Diekhoff tried to kill an ex-girlfriend when she began dating someone new. He was convicted of attempted manslaughter, but an appeals court overturned that decision. While awaiting a new trial, Diekhoff broke into his former girlfriend's house and kidnapped her. He was convicted and ultimately served 13 years in an Indiana prison.
Since his release in the summer of 2001, Diekhoff has been in more trouble with Indiana Police. In fact, at the time of Lori's abduction, Diekhoff was out on bond on three charges including Serious Violent Felon Possession of a Firearm. |
