  Case Story
Lethal Cocktail of Vandalism, Arson, and Abduction
Police in Bloomington, Ill. say Lori Wagner has been through a lot in the past few months. And it may all stem from her friendship with Michael Diekhoff. Police say Diekhoff is bad news. He's a truck driver out of Indiana. Lori Wagner worked as a dispatcher for a trucking company in Bloomington, Ill. And that's how they became friends to catch a quick lunch or exchange an occasional email. But in the fall of 2004, police say Lori broke off the friendship when Diekhoff couldn't handle her dating another man. Since then, her life has been turned upside down. In the following weeks, Lori and her family had their car's vandalized with paint. Then police charged Diekhoff with multiple counts of Telephone Harrassment after Lori and her children were threatened over the phone. And on October 28, Lori's house was set on fire. Authorities determined the blaze was arson and have named Diekhoff a suspect.

  Gone Without A Trace
On the morning of January 5, 2005, neighbors say Diekhoff left his home in Westport, Ind. around 10:30. He was reportedly depressed and agitated. He was driving his 2001 Ford Super Crew F-150 truck, and police belive he had a loaded high-powered rifle -- complete with scope. Less than 24 hours later -- and about 240 miles away -- Lori Wagner arrived for her shift at the NuWay Trucking company in Bloomington, Ill. It was 5:30 on the morning of January 6. But Lori never made it in the door that day. When she was late her supervisor became concerned and went out to the parking lot. There he saw Lori's car and her cell phone on the ground in the snow.  Lori's co-workers were familiar with Diekhoff because he had made several threatening phone calls to her office. Lori's boss called the McLean County Sheriff's Office and the hunt began -- with US Marshals joining in. Authorities charged Diekhoff with Aggrivated Kidnapping and began searching for his black and silver Ford F-150 pickup. But Lori's co-workers rembered spotting a brown and tan Ford Windstar minivan near the company parking lot just prior to Lori's abduction. Police believe Diekhoff may be driving that vehicle. Later that day Diekhoff called his mother to say he was on the road.  When she told him police had been looking for him and asking about a missing person, police say he admitted that he was with that "missing girl."

  Deja Vu Abduction
When police pulled Diekhoff's rap sheet, they discovered he had not only kidnapped a former girlfriend in the past, he actually tried to kill her. In August 1987, Diekhoff spotted a former girlfriend sitting in a car with her new boyfriend. Diekhoff tapped on the window several times with a gun. When the boyfriend attempted to speed away, Diekhoff fired three times, hitting his former girlfriend in the back. He was convicted of Attempted Manslaughter, but an appeals court overturned that decision. While awaiting a new trial, Diekhoff broke into his former girlfriend's house and kidnapped her. He was convicted and ultimately served 13 years in an Indiana prison. Since his release in the summer of 2001, Diekhoff has been in more trouble with Indiana Police. In fact, at the time of Lori's abduction, Diekhoff was out on bond on three charges including Serious Violent Felon Possession of a Firearm.
