  Case Story
  Break In Bank Shootout Case
Police in Columbus, Ohio have identified the suspect in Officer Bryan Hurst's murder. They say that Daryl Lawrence is the man seen on surveillance tape in the deadly shootout with Officer Hurst at the Fifth-Third Bank in Columbus, Ohio. The identification came after Lawrence sought medical attention for a gunshot wound in Washington, DC.  Astute hospital officials there linked the man they were treating to Columbus, Ohio.  They reached out to authorities who were able to tie the gunshot victim in DC to the murder in the bank. Cops say that Lawrence could be driving one of two vehicles:  a 1999 dark red Chrysler 300M with Ohio plates FB65MD or a 2001 black Chevy Suburban with Ohio plates DCC4343.

Robbery Goes Wrong, Cop Goes Down
On January 6, 2005, Police Officer Bryan Hurst was working special duty at the Fifth-Third Bank in Columbus, Ohio.  Cops say that on that very routine Thursday morning a masked robber entered the bank with a chrome, semi-automatic handgun and shattered the calm. Investigators say the gunman stormed in and attempted a takeover-style robbery.  They say that as he ordered people to the ground, the shooter turned and fired at Bryan.  Police say Officer Hurst and the gunman then had a gun battle inside the bank.  Eyewitnesses say as many as seven shots were fired.  Officer Hurst was fatally wounded and died later at the hospital.  Police believe the killer was wounded in the shootout as well, and that he likely cut his face with shattered glass as he fled the bank. Detectives on the scene followed a blood trail out of the bank and into the parking lot.  Police locked down the area and even searched a nearby apartment complex, but the killer escaped. Cops believe the same gunman who killed Bryan Hurst had successfully robbed banks in their jurisdiction in the past.  Investigators are pinning a September 2004 takeover-style bank robbery on the shooter.  They say in that incident, the man robbed the Sky Bank.  Once again, he ordered everyone to the floor, but this time made it behind the bank counter.  The robber made off with an undisclosed amount of money in that case, but not before he fired at, and thankfully missed, a bank employee.  Cops say the description of both robbers is identical.
