Lee's Spree |
|
| |
Police in Georgia and South Carolina are tracking a murderous spree that began October 22, 2004 in East Point, Georgia and has continued for over a month. Police say Tobias Lee has brutally murdered two men, raped a young woman, and robbed two soldiers.
According to officials, Lee's spree began when he and an acquaintance, Howard Jerome Rockmore, got into a heated argument outside Rockmore's apartment complex. They say soon after, Rockmore lay dead on the concrete from four gunshot wounds.

Police Tracking An Accused Killer |
|
| |
Lee fled in a stolen car three hours south to Buena Vista, Georgia to stay at a friend's house-- but police say if his goal was to lay low, all he did was stir up more trouble. Officials say Lee forced himself on a female friend, raped her, and stabbed her through her forearm with a kitchen knife.
But Lee got spooked when his housemate's friend flushed the toilet in the middle of the night. Police say Lee ran out of the house and stole a car from another friend's relative.
Officials tracked Lee to Columbia, South Carolina, where he was staying with an old girlfriend's sister. But police say Lee's violent spree wasn't over; on November 23, 2004, Lee and two accomplices held up two soldiers in a bank parking lot. Luckily, the men got a good look at the license plate of Lee's car and called the police. A quick scan showed the car was stolen, and officials began canvassing a local neighborhood. There, they say they found the abandoned stolen car. Lee was nowhere in sight.
On November 24, 2004, police say Lee struck again. 74-year-old James Hammond was part of a neighborhood watch group and was patrolling his neighborhood when he noticed two suspicious men. Hammond approached them, while pulling out his cell phone to call police. According to officials, that was all it took for Lee to act. Police say Lee grabbed James' cell phone from Hammond's grasp, and pulled a gun from his waistband, shooting Hammond twice. Then, cops say Lee stole Hammond's red Mazda pick-up truck, and fled.
From there, police say Lee dropped off his accomplice at a local Greyhound station with $100 and told him to go home. |
