  Case Story
  Barefoot On Foot
North Carolina cops are tracking a fugitive who is living up to his last name.  William Glen Barefoot is running from the law -- and he's barefoot. U.S. Marshals, who are heading up the investigation, say this is one of the more unusual cases. They are chasing a barefooted fugitive who continues to elude them in woods and in stolen vehicles. The manhunt began on October 25, 2004. The State Bureau of Investigation says two female officers at the Hoke County Jail in Raeford, North Carolina, were returning an inmate to his cell after treating him for injuries. At that time, investigators say Barefoot jumped up and overpowered the two guards. After pepper spraying one of the jailers, Barefoot locked the other officer in a holding cell, took her keys and fled in her SUV. A BOLO went out and an alert officer in Aberdeen, North Carolina spotted the stolen vehicle. He attempted to pull over Barefoot, but the fugitive hit the gas and led the officer on a chase through town. Finally, Barefoot bottomed out on railroad tracks. The officer says Barefoot got out of the vehicle and ran barefooted into the woods. A two day search of the wooded area was conducted with choppers, K-9's and teams of cops on foot. Investigators came up empty and concluded that Barefoot had left the area.  But a few days later, cops got a lucky break.

  Just Steps Behind Barefoot
On Halloween night, investigators got a treat -- a tip from Barefoot's family. They say it was no trick either. Barefoot's brother called law enforcement and said the fugitive was outside his home in a wooded area in Cumberland County, North Carolina asking for help.  He said Barefoot wanted food, first aid supplies and money. His family tried to talk him into surrendering. Instead, Barefoot took off deep into the woods barefooted. Again, cops were called in to scour the woods in Cumberland County. During the course of the week they connected Barefoot to several break-ins. In one case, Barefoot allegedly broke into a home when no one was there. Police say he took food, used bandages and slept in a bed while there. Later, cops linked him to another break in where Barefoot reportedly tied up the homeowners and took their rental car -- a dark blue 2005 Dodge Magnum station wagon. Investigators tracked the stolen car to a lake across the state to a rural area of Gastonia, North Carolina, located about an hour west of Charlotte. Police believe Barefoot unsuccessfully tried to sink the car. Nearby, a resident reported his pickup truck missing.  Since then police have been on a wild goose chase looking for Barefoot.  Investigators have recovered the stolen pick up truck and have linked him to countless break-ins in the area of Gastonia. Police know he has stolen three weapons, money, food and first aid supplies this week. Knowing Barefoot has weapons, law enforcement are searching for him with extreme caution. For days, a massive manhunt of a huge wooded area in Gastonia has been underway. U.S. Marshals and teams of police officers have scoured the woods for Barefoot and clues. So far they have found a makeshift campsite, where he may have slept. Marshals also discovered half eaten food, dirty t-shirts, plastic bags and bandages.  Marshals on the hunt believe they are only steps behind the elusive Barefoot.

  Barefoot Almost Killed A Cop
Law enforcement officials say Barefoot's criminal history is frightening. His latest conviction was  in 2001. Major Dan Skamperle of the Scotland County Sheriff's Office was shot multiple times in the line of duty as he was chasing two men in connection with a  break in. Barefoot was one of those men the sheriff's deputy was trying to track down.   Officials say Barefoot and his partner in crime fled in Major Skamperle's car and abandoned it near Fort Bragg. Later, Barefoot and his accomplice were arrested and tried. Barefoot received an 84-year sentence. He was serving that sentence when he was transferred to the Hoke County Jail to address charges of home invasion. Barefoot was only at the jail about ten hours before he escaped. North Carolina State Bureau of Investigation Agent Mitch Deaver says, "Glen Barefoot is capable of anything. He was convicted on attempted murder charges of a Scotland County deputy. He is known to carry weapons. He is someone who knows the outdoors. We are extremely concerned about the public coming into contact with him."
