  Case Story
  Christmas Terrorist At Large
Joshua Thompson was 17 when he murdered another teenager --it was just two days before Christmas, 2001, and Thompson beat the other teen to death with a baseball bat. He drew an 18-year sentence Now Georgia Department of Corrections says he's added prison escape to his record. Thomson was one of four inmates who broke out of Georgia's Montgomery State Prison in Mount Vernon on Saturday October 9. A massive manhunt is underway across northwest Georgia involving federal, state, county and local police.  Georgia Department of Corrections spokeswoman Scheree Lipscomb says, "Most of them are from the northwest corner of Georgia.  We assume they may be heading back to that area, but we don't know."

  The Breakout
The prison is located about 150 miles southeast of Atlanta.  Lipscomb says on Saturday, October 9, 2004 the men were in the recreation yard prior to their escape.  Investigators have determined the four inmates cut a hole through a security fence at the medium security prison between 9 and 9:30 p.m.   According to Department of Corrections investigators, they have not ascertained what tool the inmates used to cut the fence. Investigators believe the men fled in a stolen 1996, white Jeep Cherokee, Georgia plate number 8268ALW.   Police are following up on all leads and are canvassing neighborhoods in towns in northwest Georgia, where the men are from. All four are white males who officials say met in prison.  Investigators are unsure if the escapees are armed but urge residents to proceed with caution if approached by the men.  They remain hopeful to recapture the men.

One Captured After Run In with Alabama Resident
Department of Corrections officials say Tracy Mullins, one of the four escapees, was located on Monday, October 11, in of all places, a hospital.  They say Mullins attempted to burglarize a home in Birmingham, Alabama.  During the burglary attempt officials say the resident at the home shot Mullins in self defense.  Mullins, under watch by law enforcement, is in the intensive care unit at the University of Alabama at Birimingham Hospital.
