Botched Robbery Turns To Murder |
|
| |
On October 5, 2004, 34-year-old Helen Walker was finishing up her shift at the Best Western off of I-295 in Jacksonville, Florida. She worked the 11 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift as a night auditor, which was typically quiet. Being a busy mother of three with a husband in the US Navy, Helen liked this shift because she could be home in time for her children in the morning. Her husband, Harold, says Helen would make breakfast, and get the kids off to school, then go to bed. Helen would be home and ready for the kids to help them when they returned home from school.
But on October 5 she wasn't there for her kids. Around 5 am, surveillance cameras in the hotel's lobby caught a man walking in. Officials say the unknown assailant asked Helen about the cost of a room, but the exchange quickly turned into an attempted robbery. The man caught clearly on surveillance demanded money from Helen. She was prepared to give him money, when he shot and killed her. The killer nervously turned and left without taking a penny.
Jacksonville detectives are desperate to solve this cold blooded murder of an innocent victim. Fortunately police have a high quality surveillance video from the hotel. This provides them with some key clues. |

Investigators Dissect Surveillance Video |
|
| |
Detectives have examined the surveillance video from the Best Western over 100 times. Lt. Tom Hackney says, "You cannot watch the video tape of this woman's life ending without being impacted by it."
On the tape, the suspect, a white male, approximately 25 to 30 years old, enters the lobby. Lt. Hackney says, "He's wearing what looks like a skull cap or a regular old ski cap, but later in the video you can see it's a ski mask that he pulls down. The ski mask is black and has one cut out for his eyes and nose.
According to Lt. Hackney, the best clue is the t-shirt the killer is wearing. "It's a white t-shirt and it appears to be some kind of race car shirt. We can't tell for sure what type of decal is on it because the video is not clear enough to show whether it's an actual car from one particular driver or some kind of commemorative NASCAR shirt." Detectives are scouring t-shirt shops in the area looking for this t-shirt, hoping it may trigger a lead.
Based on the video, the suspect was wearing long, baggy jean shorts, short socks, two tone gray or black sneakers. Lt. Hackney believes the killer may have even walked through mud which may be why the sneakers appear two tone in the video. |
