Black Charged With Murder |
|
| |
Three-year-old Tyreek Davis has been missing since September 29, 2004, and though his body hasn't been found, police believe he is dead. Herman Lee Black, the one man who might know what happened, was officially charged with the youngster's murder on October 14th.
Police have been unable to get a straight story out Black, but they say he's changed his tale at least 3 times. Those inconsistencies lead them to believe foul play was involved in the child's disappearance. Agents ran forensic tests at an FBI lab on Black's truck and woodcutting tools, but would not reveal the results. Black still refuses to talk, but police believe he could lead them to Tyreek's body.
Black has been in jail since September 29, 2004, when Tyreek first went missing. His mother, Linette Davis was dating Herman Black, and had left her son in his care that morning. Black told Linette that he was going to take the boy with him to cut some wood.
Deputies say that several hours later Black returned to the motel in Carmel Church, Va. where the couple was living and told Linette that he'd left the toddler sleeping in his truck parked outside a Wal-Mart in Fredericksburg, Va. He allegedly told Linette that when he returned to the truck Tyreek was gone.
A store surveillance tape does show Black entering the store and leaving. He later told police he did not buy anything because the checkout lines were too long. Surveillance footage from the parking lot shows Black's gold and brown 1989 GMC pickup with a "Black's Tree Service" sign on the side of it, but it is impossible to see whether the toddler was inside the cab or not. |

Black Changes His Story...Again |
|
| |
When police realized Black was wanted on an unrelated weapons charge, police were able to hold him in custody. Black, who is a convicted felon, had violated his parole trying to purchase a firearm. Police began a search for the missing boy after Black's initial account that Tyreek had been abducted from the Walmart parking lot.
But according to police, Black changed his story a second time after repeated questioning about Tyreek's disappearance, and police halted the search, skeptical of Black's claims that the boy had been abducted.
Police say in Black's new version of the story, he left home with Tyreek and set off to purchase some marijuana. Police say Black told them he left Tyreek in an open area in the woods and then went back to his truck and smoked his marijuana. Police say Black claims that he was high and completely forgot about Tyreek. He says he left the toddler behind in the woods while he drove to Walmart, and when he returned, Tyreek was gone.
On the evening of October 4, Black accompanied authorities to the wooded area where he said he had left Tyreek. Police decided to resume their search, and on Tuesday, October 5th, scores of officers, rescuers and Marines converged to search a 14-mile-wide circle that included terrain pocked with ravines, streams and uncovered wells.
Bloodhounds and German shepherds aided the search, but the dogs did not hone in on any sign of the boy. Dive teams felt their way through at least three murky ponds, concentrating on the edges and deepest spots. |

The Waiting Game |

Since Tyreek's mysterious disappearance, the small Virginia community has been frantically searching and waiting for any sign of the boy. According to police, they are investigating a number of leads, but are almost certain that Tyreek was murdered. |
