Convict and Prison Guard on the Run |
|
| |
The U.S. Marshals say a dangerous convict is accused of receiving help from a female prison guard to break out of a Nashville prison on Saturday, October 2. According to the Marshals, Edward McDaniel was having a romantic relationship with prison guard Vickie Sanford. Sanford allegedly enlisted the help of a relative who was also a security guard at the prison in order to smuggle a guard's uniform to McDaniel. |

Prison Break Was Well Planned |
|
| |
The U.S. Marshals know that Sanford withdrew $2000 from her bank account the day before the prison break. She then began a double shift at 5:30 on Saturday morning. Prison officials believe both McDaniel and Sanford walked out of the prison together when Sanford's shift ended between 10 and 11 on Saturday night. McDaniel was discovered missing at 8 a.m. the next day, with his prison clothes stuffed under his sheets to make it look like he was still in bed. McDaniel never showed up for work on Sunday.
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reports that Sanford received help from her son-in-law, Michael Moize, to get the uniform needed for McDaniel to escape. Moize was also a security guard at the Lois M. DeBerry Special Needs Facility where McDaniel was an inmate. Moize has been charged with permitting or facilitating escape.
McDaniel is described as a sad and lonely inmate with manic depressive and suicidal tendencies. But something changed in the summer of 2004. Prison officials say McDaniel became a much happier and more carefree guy. That is likely when Sanford and McDaniel began their relationship. But prison officials and the U.S. Marshals fear that Sanford may be in grave danger now that McDaniel has successfully escaped. |

Loner With a Long History of Violent Crime |
|
| |
The U.S. Marshals say McDaniel's rap sheet dates back to the age of 15. But his current 20-year prison sentence is the result of the attempted murder of a police officer in 1996. McDaniel was pulled over for a traffic stop when he began fighting with the officer, stole his gun and shot him seven times. The officer survived, but lost his leg after the shooting.
Prison records reveal that McDaniel has had no visitors in prison since 2000 and seldom made phone calls. With few contacts outside of prison, McDaniel could have fled to anywhere in the country.
Police say McDaniel should be considered extemely dangerous. He may be in Sanford's black or dark green 2000 Jeep Cherokee Sport, with a Marine Corps "Semper Fi" sticker, a "Proud Parent of a Marine" sticker on the back window and a Fraternal Order of Police sticker on the front windsheild.
