Couple Mysteriously Disappears |
|
| |
When neighbors in Hettinger, North Dakota noticed that the lights had been left on overnight at Norman and Yvonne Olson's home, and that the garden and flower beds were drying up, they worried that something wasn't right. It just wasn't like the elderly couple.
The last anyone saw Norman and Yvonne was the morning of Saturday, August 14th, 2004. Their daughter Jackie had been trying to reach them all weekend. When one of her parents' neighbors called to tell her about the lights and the garden, she, too became worried. So Jackie and her husband went to check on Norman and Yvonne. That's when their worries turned to fear. |

Alarming Clues Discovered |
|
| |
When Jackie Arrived at her parents' home, she found the front door to be locked. She knew they never kept the door locked when they were home. She had a key, but even after she unlocked the door, she couldn't open it.
With their concern growing, Jackie and her husband went around to the back of the house, and decided to break into the garage to enter the house through the back door. That's when they discovered that the car was missing.
As they carefully opened the door, the couple was assulted by a terrible smell. They quickly discovered where it was coming from. A package of meat had been set out on the kitchen counter to thaw. It had turned rancid. In addition, the coffee maker had been left on, and had burnt out.
Jackie then found out why she couldn't get the front door opened: a dining room chair had been wedged under the knob.
Yvonne's purse was where she always left it, and all of her cash and credit cards were still in it. Jackie found her mother's only pair of eyeglasses lying on the garage floor, open and unbroken.
Police believe a .22 caliber revolver may be missing from the home. But there was no sign of a struggle -- and, since then, there's been no sign of Norman and Yvonne Olson, either. |

Search Turns Up Nothing |
|
| |
Police and the family have organized several searches, with volunteers in aircraft and on horseback scouring areas around the Olsons' home, but to no avail. It's as if the couple simply vanished from the face of the Earth.
Norman Olson was recently diagnosed and was being treated for Alzheimer's Disease. He was in the very early stages, and still able to drive and function normally for the most part, according to his family. His main symptom was short-term memory loss.
Yvonne Olson cannot drive or function well without her glasses, and her family says she would never willingly leave the house without them, or without her purse. |
