  Case Story
  Thief Crashes Through Courtroom Window
Jason Belmer is known as a thug and petty thief.  He has had run-ins with the law multiple times over his 25 years.  Back in 1999, he was caught stealing a jewelry box out of a home in Newbury, Maine.  But as much as Belmer has gotten in trouble, he is scared to death to pay for his crimes.  So when Belmer was brought to the Nerbury District Court to hear the burglary charges, he panicked.  He ran through the courtroom and out the window.  Only problem was, the window wasn't open. After crashing through the glass, Belmer dashed through town to a bridge over the Sebasticook River.  He took off his clothes and jumped in.  Cops scoured the area, and two hours later found Belmer shivering and bleeding on a sand bar in the middle of the river, a mile downstream from the bridge.  He was taken back into custody and eventually pled guilty to the escape charge and no contest to the burglary.  He was sentenced to two years in prison.

  Agents: Belmer Becomes Drug Dealer
Prison, it seems, didn't rehabillitate Belmer.  In late August, police and Maine DEA agents got a tip that Belmer was dealing drugs, specifically cocaine that had been smuggled in from Massachusetts.  According to the tipster, eight pounds of cocaine could be found buried in Belmer's grandmother's backyard. Until then, Belmer hadn't been a focus of drug enforcement, but eight pounds of cocaine is a very large amount for Maine, so agents took it very seriously.  They investigated the charge, and eventually dug up the grandmother's backyard.  They did indeed find eight pounds of cocaine under the grandmother's shed.  Agents went to arrest Belmer, but once again, he ran, this time into the adjacent woods. A search ensued, but Belmer was gone.

A Random Stop Leads to Violence
Police have learned that after his escape, Belmer picked up his girlfriend, Michelle Carmack, and fled the state.  They believe he went to Florida first, and stole a car.  Then, they say, he drove the stolen car west, heading for Colorado Springs, Colorado. Belmer encountered trouble when he crossed the border from Kansas into Colorado.  A Colorado State Police trooper stopped Belmer for speeding.  But once again, Belmer refused to be taken into custody.  When the trooper approached the car, Belmer sprang out at him, attacked him and pushed him to the ground.  The trooper says that Belmer went for his weapon, but the trooper was able to fend him off.  Belmer jumped up and fled into a nearby cornfield.  Carmack was in the car, and was arrested and sent back to Maine, where she faces charges of helping Belmer escape. Meanwhile, police say Belmer stole a truck in Colorado, drove it back to Kansas, abandoned it and stole another vehicle.  Police believe this second vehicle contained two handguns and some ammunition.  They fear what Belmer might do if confronted by law enforcement again, now that he is armed.
