Police Search For Man After Baby Abducted |

When police in Meriden, Connecticut discovered the body of a woman who'd been stabbed to death and stuffed into a trash bag, they believed the victim was 20-year-old Jennifer Helmedach. Her one-year-old daughter Ayanna was missing, so police immediatly issued an AMBER Alert. Investigators believed Ayanna was in the custody of the man believed to be her father, David Bell, and a woman named Faye Bennett.
But then the case took a strange twist. When police identified the victim -- it turned out to be Faye Bennett. They learned the woman traveling with Bell was Jennifer Helmedach -- who was at first believed to be the murder victim. Cops said they could not be sure whether she was with Bell voluntarily.
On September 4, 2004, two days after she went missing, Ayanna was located and returned unhurt to her grandmother.
Bell has been charged with kidnapping, and police want to question him about the murder of Faye Bennet. |

Bell is no stranger to police and the court system. In addition to the kidnapping charge, police say he's wanted for attacking a victim with a hammer in a robbery attempt.
In October of 2003, Bell pleaded guilty to third degree assault. He was sentenced to a year in jail. He served about ten months of that sentence before being released.
His most recent court appearance involved a paternity suit, filed by Jennifer Helmedach. She claims Bell fathered her daughter, Ayanna, and she seeks financial and medical support for the child. Bell claims he is not the father, and is seeking genetic testing for himself, Jennifer and Ayanna. |
