Missing Girl Last Seen With Former Baby-Sitter |
|
| |
Patricia Ann Miles walked to a neighborhood store in Gilmore, Arkansas on Sunday afternoon, August 15th, planning to buy a soda and some sunflower seeds. But when she went to pay, she realized she didn't have enough money. A clerk at the store says six-year-old Patricia then asked to use the telephone. According to police, she called one of her neighbrs, Jo Ann Buchanan, and asked to borrow some money.
Buchanan used to babysit for Patricia. But she'd had a falling out with the girl's parents, and they'd forbidden her to see their child. Patricia's family says Buchanan had started making harassing phone calls to them -- sometimes claiming that Patricia had been hurt, or even killed.
But when little Patricia phoned Buchanan that Sunday to borrow some change, police say Buchanan agreed. Police say Patricia went to Buchanan's house, then returned to the store to pay for her purchase. She left the store on her pink bike. Patricia's family has not seen her since. |

A Desperate Search Begins |
|
| |
When Patricia's parents reported her missing, police, family members and neighbors all began searching. Among the searchers was Jo Ann Buchanan. Investigators say they found her aloof behavior odd. Then, they say, they found out why.
The pastor of a nearby church told police he saw Patricia climb into Buchanan's red Ford Minivan the afternoon that she disappeared. He said he watched Buchanan drive away, toward a local cornfield. Other witnesses also reported seeing Buchanan with the child that day.
Police arrested Buchanan and charged her with kidnapping. Despite the witnesses who say they saw her with Patricia, Buchanan denies seeing the girl that day. Investigators say Buchanan told them she suffers from depression -- but she insisted that she had nothing to do with Patricia's disappearance. |

Police Find Patricia's Bike |
|
| |
Police found Patricia's bicycle at around 2:00 a.m. Monday morning, August 16, 2004. It was discovered only seven miles north from where she was last seen. Later in the day, cops found Patricia's tennis shoes. But nothing has led them to the missing child.
When she was last seen, Patricia was wearing a red shirt and blue shorts, and her hair was in three ponytails. She goes by the nickname Tee-Tee. |
