Case Story |

Pregnant Woman Disappears |
|
| |
On Monday August 9, 2004 police in Salt Lake City arrested Lori Hacking's husband Mark, calling him responsible for her death. Though there was no sign of Lori's body, police cited evidence found in the Hacking home and car.
On Monday, July 19, police in Salt Lake City got a frantic call from Mark Hacking. He told them that his wife, Lori, had gone out for a morning jog, and had never returned. "She just vanished," says Detective Dwayne Baird of the Salt Lake City Police Department.
A massive search was quickly organized for the 27 year-old woman, who'd recently found out she was five weeks pregnant. But there was no sign of her. Mark Hacking says that Lori went jogging in Memory Grove Park in Salt Lake City at about 5:30 in the morning, while he was still asleep. She went jogging in the morning instead of her normal time in the afternoon, he says, because the two were planning to go to the movies when Lori was done with work. Mark was taking the day off. According to Mark, the plan was for Lori to wake him up when she was done with her jog, then he was to drive her to work. She was supposed to be at work by 7:00 am.
Mark says he woke up on his own after 8:00 a.m. He called Lori at work, assuming she had decided not to wake him. When he found out she never made it in, he says he began to worry. He drove to the park, a few blocks away from their home. He found her car there and walked up into the park to see if he could find her. After looking for her for about an hour, the panic set in, says Mark. He called the cops, who began the search. |

A Bizarre Turn Of Events |
|
| |
Cops have been unable to uncover anything which would tell them what happened to Lori at the park. They say they did find one witness who said she saw Lori stretching by her car just after 6:00. This would make sense, as Lori usually stretched after her walk, and she had to get to work at 7:00. But it means that Lori would have had to have been abducted AFTER she ran, instead of during her run. It also would place the scene of her abduction near her car, but police have found no evidence of a struggle there.
Over the next several days, this case would take one bizarre turn after another.
Hours after Mark Hacking reported his wife missing, police received a call about a disturbance at a hotel near the Hacking home. When they arrived, they found Mark Hacking, running around -- naked. Mark was released to his family, who checked him into a psychiatric facility.
Then came another shock. Everyone believed that Mark and Lori were about to move to North Carolina, where Mark would attend medical school. But Mark's family announced that he admitted to them that he'd never applied to medical school. In fact, his family learned, he'd never even graduated from college.
Lori's co-workers believe that may explain an incident that occured on the Friday before she disappeared. They say Lori received a phone call that appeared to deeply disturb her. After hanging up, they say, she began to cry. The co-workers say Lori had been in the process of trying to find on-campus housing at UNC medical school, where Mark told her he'd be going. They believe the call was from the school -- telling her he'd never enrolled there.
Suddenly, the distraught husband was described by police as "a person of interest" in his wife's disappearance. |

Suspicions Mount |
|
| |
Police have learned that shortly before Mark Hacking called them on July 19th, he purchased a new mattress. They wonder why he'd need to replace a mattress on that particular day. Cops haven't said anything about what may have happened to the old mattress, but they were seen removing box spring's from Mark and Lori's apartment.
That's not all they found there.
Police in Salt Lake City are confirming that they discovered a knife in the Hacking home which was stained with blood and had hairs on it.
As police continued to try to unravel the deepening mystery, the Hacking family prayed that Lori and her unborn child would be found and returned to their loved ones.
