  Case Story
Accused Cop Killer May Be Armed To The Teeth
At first, nothing seemed strange about the man gassing up his SUV at a filling station in rural Calhoun County, South Carolina early on Sunday morning, July 18th, 2004. But employees became suspicious when the man tried to use his credit card -- and it didn't work. They called the sheriff's office, and a patrol car quickly arrived. When he saw it approaching, the man bolted, running off into the woods. It soon became clear why. Police learned that the SUV was stolen. And they discovered that the man who'd run off was a violent felon who'd recently been paroled in Virginia, where he was serving time for stabbing a victim during a home break-in. His name: Mikal Deen Mahdi. Police say he was in the middle of a crime spree that would turn him into a cop killer.

An Escalating Series of Violent Crimes
Little is known about what Mahdi did when he was first released from prison in May, 2004. But in the days leading to the incident at the gas station, cops believe he'd embarked on a series of violent carjackings. On July 15, 2004, they say Mahdi stole a Mercury Sable from Brunswick County, Virginia.  Late on the 15th, in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, a gas station employee was killed.  29 year-old Christopher Boggs was working at the Exxon Station on Broad Street.  A man in a white tank top walked into the store, had a quick conversation with Christopher, pulled a gun and shot him three times, killing him.  He fled with cash and a 40 ounce bottle of beer.  Police do not know whether this is Mikal Mahdi, but it makes sense in terms of timing and location.  Then, three days later, on July 18, 2004, police in Columbia, South Carolina say Mahdi carjacked a Ford Expedition at gunpoint. Police say Mahdi was driving the Expedition when he was spotted at the gas station -- but the plates on the vehicle were from the stolen Sable. Police brought in bloodhounds, and they were able to track Mahdi's trail about a quarter mile into the woods before they lost the scent.

  Veteran Cop Gunned Down
Orangeburg, South Carolina Police Captain Jim Myers had a small farm not far from where deputies say Mahdi abandoned the stolen Expedition. As Mahdi made his way through the woods, police believe he ran into Capt. Myers, who was off-duty and working on his property.  Capt. Myers, a 30-year veteran officer, was in charge of Special Operations for the  Orangeburg police. But he was apparently taken by surprise. According to police, Mahdi, armed with a small caliber handgun, shot the officer multiple times, killing him. Then, police believe Mahdi stole Capt. Myers' police-issued pickup truck and took off. Inside the truck, cops say, was a high-powered rifle, and possibly other weapons.
