Elizabeth Smart Disappears |

Police say on Wednesday June 5, 2002 between 1 and 4 a.m., 14-year-old Elizabeth Smart was abducted at gunpoint from her home in the Federal Heights section of Salt Lake City, Utah. Elizabeth's 9-year-old sister, who was in the room at the time of the alleged abduction, was not able to see the face of the kidnapper, but has given police the best description possible. Police searched the area around the Smart house, they have gone door to door looking for clues.
Elizabeth's parents and relatives were investigated, but police could find no evidence that they were involved. Police have looked into other area suspects including a milkman seen in the area the morning of the abduction as well as a man who had done some handyman work in the Smart home, Richard Ricci. Ricci seemed to be the best suspect as his actions were suspicious, but when he died in prison (for an unrelated matter) it seemed that the abduction may never get solved. In October 2002, police received information about a man known only as "Emmanuel," who police say have have information about Elizabeth's disappearance. According to the Smarts, Mary Katherine, Elizabeth's 9 year-old sister and witness to the crime, came to her parents indicating that Emmanuel may be the man who took Elizabeth.
The Smarts had met Emmanuel in downtown Salt Lake City as a homeless man. He initially asked Lois Smart for money, and she asked him if he needed work. The next day, he showed up at their house. The man known as "Emmanuel" told Ed Smart that he and his sister were staying with someone in the valley and that they were traveling to different cities preaching to the homeless. Ed Smart offered the man some day labor work at his home; he worked for five hours, helping on the roof and raking leaves. He has not been seen since. |

Law enforcement has tried to locate him, but has been unsuccessful. A composite drawing was made from Ed Smart's recollection from the previous year. Based on the sketch, police later got a tip from a woman who says she is Emmanuel's sister. She informed cops that Emmanuel's true name is Brian David Mitchell. According to her, he changed his name to David Emmanuel Isiah for religious purposes. He is homeless and believed to be traveling with his wife, Wanda. |
