  Case Story
Teenage Murder Suspect On The Run
Police in Mercer County, West Virginia describe 14-year-old Kayla Marie LaSala as "cunning," with mental abilities way beyond her years. They also describe her as dangerous -- and deadly. On February 23, 2004, police say LaSala murdered her father by stabbing him 108 times. Police say the motive for the vicious attack isn't clear -- but they say that she confessed to the crime. She was charged as an adult with first degree murder, and her trial was scheduled for September. While she waited, LaSala was allowed to stay with an uncle, under house arrest. To ensure that she stayed at the location, she had to wear an electronic monitoring device around her ankle.

  An Escape With A Twist
On Saturday, July 3, 2004, police received an alarm telling them there was a problem with LaSala's monitoring device. When police went to the home where she was staying, they made a startling discovery. The 14-year-old girl had cut off her anklet. But there was more. LaSala apparently had come up with a plan she thought might fool the authorities monitoring her home confinement into thinking she was still inside the house, moving around. After she cut the electronic bracelet off, police say, she glued it on the family's cat. Police say the cat was unharmed, but Kayla LaSala had vanished. Police found witnesses who reported seeing her get into a dark-colored car, possibly a black BMW, accompanied by an unidentified African-American male. But after that -- there's been no sign of her.

  New Information
Police have learned that LaSala may have stolen $3,000 at the time of her disappearance.  They have also gotten new information that LaSala may have left with a man named Troy Gilmore in that black BMW.  Police are now trying to track down Gilmore and possibly LaSala with him.
