A Father's Last Ride Home |
|
| |
It was September 18, 2003, and the small town of Lynbrook, New York was preparing for Hurricane Isabel to roll in. The news that day was wall-to-wall coverage of the storm and her heavy winds and rain. The people of the bayside community just 20 miles from New York City were closing shops and securing homes. But the weather was still calm as Anthony Battaglia left his home that morning for work. His wife, Caryn, said he kissed her goodbye and left.
Despite the storm warning, Caryn says she went about her day with her children. The couple lives on Sunset Boulavard in Lynbrook with their daughter and Caryn's son from a previous marriage. Life for Caryn and Anthony was going well.
Anthony, a mechanical engineer, and his life long friend, Steve Synder, had just opened their own business in Manhattan. The business was doing well. Caryn says that Anthony called that afternoon to tell her that he and Steve were going to have some drinks at Slate's in the city after work and he wouldn't be home until after 10:00 p.m.
After dinner, Caryn says, she put the children to bed and watched some television while she waited for Anthony to come home. Police say Anthony and Steve finished with drinks and caught the 10:34 p.m. Long Island Train to Lynbrook. What happened after that no one really knows, but it changed Caryn's life forever. |

A Cry For Help |

Caryn says she headed up to bed around 10:00 p.m. and shut the windows because the storm was starting to make its way into town. Police say around 11:12 p.m., Anthony stepped off the train at the Lynbrook train station and began his usual one-mile walk home, but he never made it.
Police say Anthony was just steps from his driveway when four hoodlums jumped him. They beat him severely, shot him and then stabbed him twice in the abdomen before taking off with his wallet. Police say despite Anthony's injuries, he somehow managed to make it up his driveway to his back door. He tried to open the door with his key, but he collapsed.
Caryn says she heard footsteps come up that back porch, but when she didn't hear the door open, she went downstairs to see what was going on. When she didn't see Anthony anywhere, she says she looked out the back door and saw him lying in a pool of blood. She opened the door and tried to help him, but realized he had been shot and was bleeding badly. She called 911, but it was too late. Doctors told Caryn that Anthony's wounds were fatal and no one could have saved him. Police say Anthony died on his porch.
Caryn was devastated and Nassau police were shocked. Things like this didn't happened in Lynbrook. |

Police began an intensive investigation. They learned that the four men who jumped Anthony were also suspects in three other robberies in the area. Detectives say no one saw Anthony being attacked that night, but victims from the earlier attacks got a good look at two of the hoodlums. The only problem -- no one knew who they were. Police say the witnesses provided them with a description of the two men and the Nissan Xterra that they were driving. Police say the sketches and a discription of the SUV were released, but they didn't generate any new leads. Anthony's murder remained unsolved.
Caryn tried to move on, but Anthony's murder was so senseless and her two children missed their daddy. Caryn said Anthony spent hours singing and dancing with their three-year-old daughter and playing games with his fourteen-year-old stepson. They were a happy family. Caryn says Anthony can never be replaced, but she wants the people responsible for his murder to be brought to justice. |
