A Brutal Murder Disrupts Quiet Canadian Town |
|
| |
St. Catharine's, Ontario is a tranquil place, having known very little violent crime. So when a call came into police on May 17, 1992 that a strangled body had been found, police and the whole community were shocked. Cops rushed to the scene and found Wanda Marlene Fedorowycz dead - lying lifeless in the rear den of her house.
As with any homicide investigation, the immediate suspect was Marlene's boyfriend, Wayne Cassidy, but Cassidy was nowhere to be found. That would change in a few moments when police would get a call from Cassidy himself. |

Killer Turns Himself In |
|
| |
Police say as they were investigating the crime scene, Cassidy called them. They say he confessed to the entire crime and wanted to turn himself in. He was at a payphone in Niagara Falls, twenty miles away. He waited for cops to come and take him into custody. Cassidy was charged with second degree Murder to which he confessed. Canadian authorities sentenced Cassidy to life in prison and transferred him to the Mountain Institution in Agassiz, British Columbia.
Prison officials say that in April of 2004, Cassidy was transferred to the Kenneth Creek Camp 50 miles away from Agassiz. The camp has a work release program, teaching inmates forestry skills which they can use after their prison terms have ended. The program has a very good track record - very few inmates ever attempt escape, and many come out of the program with the ability to reintegrate successfully into society. |

Cassidy Goes on the Run |
|
| |
Cassidy didn't stay at Kenneth Creek for long. While he was there, he met another prisoner, Stafford Lake. Lake was in prison for a brutal rape of a bartender in Quebec. Lake and Cassidy allegedly decided that prison was not for them, and when they got their opportunity to escape, prison officials say they took it. The two stuffed their sheets with pillows to simulate themselves in bed. They the allegedly walked out of their cabin and stole a car. It wasn't until the next morning that anyone noticed they were gone.
When prison officials went looking for the escapees, they soon found the stolen vehicle only a few miles from the prison. An exhaustive search of the woods surrounding the facility was conducted, but turned up nothing. Two dangerous men were on the loose and nobody knew what they were up to. |
