Jewels Go Missing Through Restaurant Wall |
|
| |
On the night of January 6, 2004, police say at least three individuals stole more than $300,000 of distinctive Middle Eastern jewelry from the Babylon Jewelry store in Lauderdale Lakes, Florida. Police were called at 2:45 a.m. in response to the burglary. Detectives discovered that the three individuals used a ladder to gain access to the roof of the Middle Eastern Fashion Center Strip mall. The thieves used a chisel and hammer to cut a hole in the concrete roof of a restaurant, Ali Baba Kabobs and Grill, then slid into the restaurant through the hole.
Once inside, the thieves broke through the wall of the restaurant in order to gain access to the Babylon Jewelry store next door. The police say they removed dry wall and insulation in order to get to the back of the jewelry safe on the other side of the wall. The thieves then used a cutting wheel, a hammer and a chisel to break through the back of the safe.
Once they broke through the safe walls, the thieves stole trays of jewelry. Police are unable to identify the suspects at this time. The only clue they have is that the thieves brought a black duffle bag with the logo "High Trails Equipment" on it, which police later found.
