Case Story |

A Bizzare, Random Attack |
|
| |
In the early morning hours of August 7, 1999 cops say a 23-year-old woman, who they are calling "Heather" for her safety, was viciously assaulted in Appleton, Wisconsin. She had driven several hours the night before to stay with her mom and attend a wedding the next day. As she put her key in the door of the house, she noticed a young man running toward her.
The man told Heather, "Come with me!," in such a way that she was convinced he was playing some sort of game and had confused her for someone else. |

But before Heather could even respond, cops say the man grabbed her by the arms and began to drag her across the street into a neighborhood park. Heather remembers being pushed down on the ground and seeing a knife. As Heather screamed for help, the man stabbed her 23 times.
Trying to maintain consciousness, Heather reached for her cell phone which had fallen to the ground nearby. She dialed 911 but for some reason the call never went through. She then proceeded to drag herself back to her mother's house.
Despite the relatively short distance back to the house, Heather had lost so much blood, she passed out at least twice along the way. Once inside she was finally able to phone for help.

Why? |
|
| |
There seemed to be no apparent motive for the attack. Detectives report the stranger did not attempt to rob her or sexually assault her before running off into the night.
For two years, Heather tried to recall the face of her attacker without success. Then, in 2001, a hypnotist trained in working with crime victims was able to help Heather describe her attacker in detail. Those descriptions led to the creation of a composite sketch. |
