  Case Story
  Two Bank Robberies Possibly Linked
Police in Anderson, IN and Muncie, IN are looking for the person or people responsible for the robbery of two banks: the Madison County Federal Credit Union on August 1, 2003 and the Mutual Federal Bank on January 12, 2004. On August 1, 2003, Assistant Police Chief Ray Novak stopped by the Madison County Federal Credit Union to deposit a check during his lunch hour. Ray arrived at the bank at 2:15 pm and was talking with the two tellers, who he had known for several years. Ray was the only patron in the Credit Union at the time. About fifteen minutes later a light skinned black male in dark pants, a black baggy shirt, baseball gloves and a black ski mask entered the Credit Union, carrying a semi-automatic revolver. The man yelled, "You know what this is!" The tellers had no idea. They thought that it was a drill being conducted by the local police department to teach them how to deal with robbery situations.

  No Drill
When Ray and the tellers did not respond, the robber yelled, "You know what this is!" again. He then instructed everyone to get down on the ground. Ray was dressed in plain clothing, so the suspect had no idea that he was a police officer. Ray wanted to keep it that way, so he didn't immediately get down on the ground. He was afraid the masked man might see his gun, so he began to slowly make his way to the conference room. Ray knew if he could make it to the conference room he could hide his gun. The robber didn't like that Ray wasn't following instructions. He began yelling at Ray to get on the ground. Once Ray got to the conference room he got on the ground. Police say when everyone finally got down on the ground, Ray watched as the masked man jumped over the second teller station and began to rob the bank. Ray waited until the man wasn't looking, then grabbed his own gun and a shootout ensued between him and the bank robber. Ray was almost out of bullets, so while he was being fired on, he made his way to the entrance of the bank. He wanted to get to his car to call for help. The suspect followed Ray out and fired one more shot at him. Luckily the he missed. The masked suspect then ran across the street to an abandon shopping center and into the woods. He was able to disappear, but was wounded by one of the gun shots. Police believe he may have been wounded in the arm. The robber did leave behind evidence. A BMW key was found on the floor and so was blood. Police believe the BMW key may have fell from the bank robber's pocket. There were also several shell casings found.

  Muncie, IN Bank Robbery
Police had no leads on the Anderson bank robbery until January 12, 2004. Police in Muncie, IN say at around 2:15 pm that day, a light skinned black man dressed in a similar outfit, entered the bank and just like the Anderson robbery, yelled, "You know what this is!" He then fired one round from his semi-automatic chrome plated handgun. He fired the shots straight up into the ceiling. He then ordered everyone to get down on the ground. The masked robber jumped over a teller station and proceeded to empty the bank tellers' drawers. Once he put the money in to a dark backpack, he jumped over the counter again and fled out the front door. Police believe he may have a getaway car in the neighborhood, because he ran round the side of the bank into an alley. The alley led to a neighborhood right behind the bank.  The robber has not been seen since.
