Child Disappears Steps from Her Own House |
|
| |
She was only going two blocks away. Brittany Fish had made the 50 foot trek many times before. This time, on April 24, 2004, the five year-old was riding her Barbie scooter. The neighborhood is full of kids, and there was no reason for Brittany's mom to worry about such a short trip. But when Patricia Denmore called her neighbor to make sure Brittany had arrived safely, her sense of safety was shattered. Brittany had not arrived, and no one knew where she was.
Police immediately started a search, but news only became worse when they found the Barbie scooter on a storm drain. Worried that Brittany might have fallen in the drain, divers went down and searched the sewers, but to no avail. |

A Miracle Comes to Syracuse |
|
| |
For the next day, Brittany's family and the whole town of Syracuse was frantic. Brittany's picture was posted everywhere and all the local media broadcast her picture and description. But when night came and then day, hope faded.
Bill Walters never expected to have anything to do with the Brittany Fish case. Of course he had heard about it, but when he went to an abandoned warehouse to check it out for possible rental, it didn't occur to him that the noise he heard might be a the young girl. But later in the day, the lightbulb went off. He went back to the warehouse and shouted Brittany's name. A wimpering sound came from under a tarp. When he pulled it off, he found little Brittany - bound in duct tape, shivering from the cold, but alive. |
