Case Story |

Who Is That Masked Man? |
|
| |
It's a case that has baffled law enforcement in the Chicago area for more than five years. A man wearing a ski mask and wielding a black semi-automatic pistol bursts into a bank and announces that there is a robbery in progress.
He screams. Waves his gun. Orders people to get down on the ground or he will hurt them. Stuffs his white plastic bag full of cash from the tellers' tills.
Within minutes, the robber flees the scene. But as bank tellers in the Chicago suburbs have learned, it's only a matter of time before the Wheaton Bank Bandit strikes again.
Agents say he committed his first crime on January 14, 2002 at the West Suburban Bank in Wheaton, Illinois. He struck the same bank again a year later, as he continued to make the rounds of area banks.
For months and years, his crimes continued to pile up. To date, he is responsible for the robbery or attempted robbery of 16 financial institutions in and around Wheaton, Ill. He was caught on many surveillance cameras -- yet no one had any idea who was behind the mask. |

Witness Puts A Face On Bank Bandit |
|
| |
After almost a year of being idle, the Wheaton Bank Robber struck again. As of January 2004, he'd already started to expand his reach, widening his circle of criminal activity from Wheaton to areas like Winfield and Naperville.
Then, on November 29, 2006, the camera-shy bank robber approached his target, the Fifth Third Bank in Winfield, Ill. But before he had a chance to make his move, a witness spotted him outside the bank -- sans mask.
As before, the robbery seemed to be a success. But despite his escape, authorities are now armed with his likeness. |

A Very Deliberate M.O. |
|
| |
Whoever the Wheaton Bank Robber is, caution appears to be his middle name. He often strikes banks at the end of the day, when he can escape in the dark, and has even been known to hit during winter storms, when the police are distracted.
Unlike most bank robbers, the bandit isn't afraid to show his weapon -- and agents say he knows how to use it. He holds it in such a way that indicates he may have received law enforcement or military training. Agents also believe he's also started wearing body armor, another indication he may be an ex-cop or soldier.
The FBI says the Wheaton Bank Robber has always committed his crimes in spurts. With more than a year having passed since he last struck, this could be the end of a long career in crime, or perhaps just the calm before another storm. |
