Case Story |
|

Linda Oliver's Life Of Pain |
|
| |
Linda Oliver is no stranger to tragedy. Her husband was killed in 1964, leaving her a single mom with four young daughters and a son. She never found out the identity of his killer or saw the case brought to justice.
Then in 1978, Linda was shot point-blank herself -- just below the heart -- by a robber. Miraculously, she survived, but again, she never found out who her attacker was or received any closure in the case.
In 1986, Linda had another brush with death. This time, police say she knew exactly who the perpetrator was, in a crime that struck much too close to home. |

Dramatic Shootout In '86 |
|
| |
Linda's daughter, Vicki, was estranged from her husband, Larry Burns, and had been staying with Linda for about three months. One morning while Linda was in her first floor bedroom, she heard Vicki cry out from upstairs. "Mama," Vicki yelled, "here comes Larry through the backyard and he's got some guns!"
Linda was prepared for just such an emergency. She jumped out of bed, grabbed her gun from the nightstand and headed for the kitchen. As she walked in, cops say, Burns blew the back door right off its hinges with a shotgun. Watching him come up the back steps, Linda popped off a round at him, but cops say he just kept coming and firing back, with one gun in each hand.
Bulllets flew past Linda's head, scorching her hair. As she jumped behind the refrigerator, a shot went right through it but missed her. She backed up into her bedroom and slammed the door.
Another shot blew through the door and passed right between her legs. Then Burns' gun jammed for a moment and he turned to fix it. Seeing a chance to make her getaway, Linda dove for the front door. As she ran outside, Burns allegedly fired two more shots at her, then headed upstairs for Vicki. |

Burns' Rampage Comes To A Head |
|
| |
Linda ran screaming for help, not knowing what would happen to her daughter, Vicki. Linda knew Vicki had bought a gun the week before and prayed to God she'd use it. But as it turned out, before Vicki had a chance to get her hands on the weapon, cops say Burns killed her with two shotgun blasts to the head.
At 8:15am, police say Burns calmly walked out of the house and sauntered down the street, guns in hand, wearing only one shoe. That's the last definitive sighting anyone has had of Larry Burns. |
