Police Say Love Letters Lead to Murder |
|
| |
William Plemons spent nearly half his life in state prisons for crimes like robbery, assault and escape. But cops say he didn't waste his time in the clink -- he established pen pal relationships with several women on the outside. According to police, Plemons would take advantage of these female admirers to get his hands on their money.
After Plemons was released from prison in 2003, he arrived in Phoenix and began a real-world relationship with one of his pen pals, Ermalinda Macatangay. He told Ermalinda he wanted to marry her. What Ermalinda didn't know, according to cops, is that Plemons was already married to another of his long-distance lovers.
But police say that didn't matter to Plemons, who was marrying for money -- not love. According to police, after Ermalinda married Plemons, he proceeded to ransack her savings accounts, stealing thousands of dollars. Police say that as the money ran out, Ermalinda realized what Plemons was up to -- and he was allegedly willing to do anything to stop her from spilling his secret. |

Local Cabbie Drives Accused Murderer |
|
| |
While Plemons was married to Ermalinda, cops say his behavior was often bizarre. He hired a local cab driver to chauffer him around -- but his destinations were less than honorable. According to police, he was often going to see prostitutes, meeting them in hotels. The prostitutes reported that Plemons never wanted to be touched. He just wanted them to "perform" for him.
Then on June 24, 2003, the cabbie picked up Plemons as usual -- but Plemons' demeanor was far from normal. The cabbie told police Plemons was nervous and was muttering to himself, "I'm so sorry. Oh, I'm so, I'm so sorry..."
Cops later found Ermalinda's lifeless body in her house. She had been strangled and severly beaten. As for Plemons, he had disappeared. |

Cops Find Car, Clues |
|
| |
As police began to look into Plemons' past, they talked to the woman he'd married before Ermalinda. When cops met up with her in New York, she told them that she feared for her life and would never be the same after discovering Plemons was no Prince Charming.
After AMW aired a profile of Plemons in February 2004, cops got information that a car, possibly stolen by Plemons, had been found at the Orlando-Sanford International Airport in Florida. Crime scene technicians took control of the car and scoured it for any scrap of information.
Police say they found several items, including a receipt from a Days Inn motel, a cigarette package, and a Burger King receipt. All of these were good clues for investigators.
More importantly, police were able to lift a fingerprint from the cigarette pack, confirming Plemons had been in the car. They also learned Plemons was still smoking Marlboros, staying in cheap motels, and eating fast food.
That wasn't the only break. Tipsters to AMW placed Plemons at a Moose Lodge in Cape Coral, Florida, acting belligerently. Police have been searching for Plemons in Florida, New York and the Philipines ever since.
