Case Story |

Inspector Vanishes While Working |
|
| |
Friends and family of missing person Mickey Wright describe him as a "homebody," but authorities fear he might never see that home again.
Wright, a Shelby County (Tennessee) Code Enforcment Officer, disappeared on April 17, 2001, while on the job. Extensive searches resulted in no new leads or evidence. Authorities were stumped and baffled at the disappearence of this hard-working husband and father of five.
Police say in his job as a code enforcer, Wright could potentially get into conflicts with code violators. It wasn't uncommon. But would someone be so enraged by a visit from Wright that he would kill the man? |

A Crack in a Cold Case |
|
| |
Cops in Memphis had a lot of reason to connect Wright with one man, Dale Mardis, a commercial property owner in northern Mississippi. Mardis owned the lot where Wright was last seen and the two had run-ins in the past. But police could not develop solid evidence against Mardis and had to release him.
Wright's case, which was quickly getting cold, was handed over to Shelby Country Deputy Joe Everson. Sometimes all an investigation needs is a new set of eyes. It was Deputy Everson's eyes that cracked this case wide open. Through the deputy's efforts, a witness, previously reluctant, came forward and provided enough information to take the case to a grand jury.
On July 15, 2004 Dale Mardis was charged with First Degree Murder in connection with the disappearence of Wright. Mardis pled not guilty and will return to court in August 2004. |

No Closure Yet |
|
| |
Until Wright's killer is locked up for good, his wife says she won't be at peace. Accused killer Mardis has yet to reveal where Wright's body is. Mickey's family and friends still need to find the remains of their friend and loved one. They are hoping that someone can follow the evidence and provide them with the information they need to bring Mickey Wright's body home. |
