Elbaneh Charged With "Lackawanna Six" |
|
| |
On May 21, 2003, a criminal complaint was filed against Jaber A. Elbaneh of Lackawanna, NY. The complaint alleged that Elbaneh, a Yemeni-American who worked as a salesman and taxi driver in the U.S., provided material support to the foreign terrorist organization al-Qaeda. According to the U.S. Department of Justice, Elbaneh, along with six other Yemeni-Americans known as the "Lackawanna Six," attended a training camp in Afghanistan in 2003, run by the international terrorist group Al-Qaeda. The seven men were subsequently charged with conspiring to contribute materials to Al-Qaeda, an act of treason. According to a Congressionally chartered terrorist database, Elbaneh fled to Yemen and was captured in January 2004. But the FBI says he escaped in 2006. And now, authorities are unsure of his whereabouts. |
