  Case Story
  A Birthday Gone Bad
To the casual observer, the scenario probably seems innocent enough: a family friend offers to throw a birthday party for a young child and their siblings.  But Mojave County, Ariz. Sheriff's detectives say that the birthday party that John Westley Winklepleck planned was far more sinister.  John Winklepleck lived in Kingman, Ariz. and had befriended the mother of three young children who all lived in his neighborhood.  When one of the sibling's birthdays came around in August of 2002, Winklepleck told the mother that he'd like to have a celebration at his sister's house. Detectives say that never happened: he instead had the party at his own nearby home and molested one of the male children. Authorities say that Winklepleck told the siblings not to say anything, but thankfully they did report his sinister activities. On August 17, 2002, Mojave County authorities were alerted and they called Winklepleck to come in for an interview. Despite saying that he'd come in, Winklepleck never showed. It was the last anyone would see of him for over two years. Authorities in Florida arrested Winklepleck in April of 2005 on an unrelated charge and discovered that the alias he was using, John Westley McGuire, was not his real name.  When the fingerprint analysis came back, authorities knew that they had their man.
