  Case Story
  Thoroughbred Horse Training Turns Deadly
Police in southeastern Indiana are looking for Roger Holbrook. They say he shot and killed fellow throughbred horse trainer and ex-wife, Barbara Holbrook on November 5, 2002. Roger and Barbara Holbrook met at the horse races. Most of their marriage was spent at tracks throughout the Midwest. Both were thoroughbred horse trainers with a track record of success and several wins under their belt. In later years, Roger left the horse training up to Barbara and began a new career as a jockey manager. In the late 90's, cops say the marriage went sour. Barbara Holbrook told friends and family that she was tired of Roger's abuse - both mental and physical. She filed for divorce in 2001, and in 2002, the divorce was final.

  The Dark Side of Divorce
Police say Roger is a compulsive gambler, and hanging out at the track just made it worse. He would frequently lay large amounts of money down on the horses that he or Barbara trained. Cops say that Barbara believed Roger had planted syringes with illegal performance enhancing drugs in her horse's stall at the Turfway Race Track in Northern Kentucky. The discovery of the needles by the Kentucky Horse Racing Commission led to Barbara's suspension from horse racing for sixty days. She had no doubt that her ex-husband was the source of the nefarious needles. She told friends she was tired of his abuse and that he always managed to drag her down. This time he had hurt her reputation too much. In the late fall of 2002 while she was suspended from horse racing, Barbara filed for a protective order from her ex-husband, Roger. A hearing was scheduled for November 6th.

  Deadly Dispute
Police believe that on November 5th, Roger went to talk to Barbara about the protective hearing that was to take place the next day. He was determined to succeed because he hadn't even hired a lawyer for the next day's hearing. Cops say that Barbara wasn't playing along. After an argument in her rented trailer on a horse farm, police say Roger returned to his car and got a gun. According to officials, he came back and started shooting through the trailer's screen door. Police say that Holbrook kept shooting, even as his ex-wife ran past him and towards a pond to get away from him. Detectives investigating the case believe she collapsed before reaching the pond, and Holbrook shot her once more in the back. Then, he simply walked away. Later that day, Roger called mutual friends and told them he had to go away for a while. He disappeared and left Indiana. On January 17, 2003, police recovered his vehicle in Memphis, TN and confirmed a sighting in Grove City, Ohio on January 18th. A former girlfriend has been working with police and showed them an area that Roger was using for target practice before the murder. Police say the ballistics match up exactly with the gun that killed Barbara. Roger Holbrook has been on the run ever since.
