  Case Story
Woman's Body Found in Big Cottonwood Canyon
As dawn was breaking on the morning of November 18th, 1998 hunters driving along the scenic roads of Big Cottonwood Canyon outside of Salt Lake City, Utah came across a murder scene. A slender young woman was lying in a pool of blood on the side of the road.

Detective's Sharp Eye Discovers Key Clue
Detective Keith Stephens of the Salt Lake County Sheriff's office soon arrived on the scene. The telltale signs of the woman's brutal murder littered the ground--footprints, shell casings, tire tracks and most telling--a baseball cap with the name Jessi written in it. But Det. Stephens' keen eye also noted a subtler clue, bits of leaves that were from a Globe Willow tree. Det. Stephens knew trees with leaves like this did not grow in the mountains. He knew they were from trees found the valley of Salt Lake City. As Det. Stephens was busy sifting through the evidence an investigative team member began drawing a composite of the unidentified young woman. Investigators knew a critical piece of the puzzle would be identifying the victim.

Leaves Lead Investigators to the Killer
On the other side of town Suzette and Laura Beristain settled down to watch the FOX13 news. Their hearts skipped a beat when they realized that the sketch being shown on TV resembled their 19 year-old sister Trisha, who had been missing. Their worst fears came true the next day when police confirmed that it was indeed Trisha whose body had been found. With the young woman identified, Det. Stephens now had an investigative lead.  He learned that Trisha had been dating a man named Jessi Vega. Jessi - the same name written in the hat found next to the body. Det. Stephens knew he was getting somewhere - he had a suspect. He went to interview Vega at his apartment and another piece of the puzzle began to fit into place. Vega's truck bed was littered with dried leaves-the same ones found with Trisha's dead body. As investigators searched the truck they also found bloody fingerprints, shell casings and strands of Trisha's hair. Vega was then named the prime suspect in the murder of Trisha Beristain-but he was already a step ahead of the police. After killing Trisha, police say that Vega sold all of his belongings to a local pawnshop. Police believe that he then fled to Chicago where he has used his ties to the Latin street gangs "La Famila" and "Folks" to go into deep hiding. For years now police have been searching for Vega in Chicago, in Utah and around the country.  They know that it is up to the public out there to give them the lead they need to catch him.
