Harmless Flirtation Turns Into Brutal Attack |
|
| |
Police in New York City are on a desperate hunt for Steven Peppaceno. They say on June 21, 2002 Peppaceno introduced himself as an ex-police officer and Vietnam war veteran to two women in a Greenwich Village bar. The women, who only wish to be identified as Kelly and Amber, believed he was a "nice guy" and accompanied Peppaceno to a 24-hour bagel shop. They agreed to let him spend the night at Amber's apartment because he was too intoxicated to drive home to Long Island. However, police say Peppaceno was not planning on quietly falling asleep. |

They say Kelly, who was to catch an early flight to California, had taken a shower, and when she stepped out of the bathroom, Peppaceno attacked her. They say Peppaceno punched Kelly in the face and held a knife to her throat as he attempted to rape her. When she fought back, detectives say Peppaceno began stabbing her. They believe Peppaceno would have killed her had the knife not broken during the struggle. According to detectives, Peppaceno ran from the apartment, and Kelly was able to wake Amber, who had fallen asleep on the couch.
The New York Police Department did not know Peppaceno's identity until they sent a surveillance photo from the bagel shop to parole officers throughout New York. A parole officer in Long Island recognized his photo and informed the NYPD that Peppaceno has a lengthy rap sheet dating back to 1979 and had spent ten years in prison after luring a woman from a bar and beating her with a crowbar after she refused his sexual advances. Police say Peppaceno should be considered armed and dangerous. |
