  Case Story
  Homeless Man Murdered
Kansas City Missouri Police officers were dispatched to an area just south of the Missouri River, an area known for the numerous homeless people who live there, on November 9, 2001. Upon arrival, officers located the body of a while male that had been hidden along the edge of the railroad tracks. The body was later identified as Michael Lillemoen. Police believe the victim was also a homeless man who had been living in the same homeless camp as James Sali for several months. On the night of the 9th, a group of camp members pooled together money to purchase beer. Sali and a companion went to go and get the beer and bring it back to the camp. When the victim grew anxious that Sali was taking too long, he left with his dog to go see if he could find Sali. About fifteen minutes later, Sali and the companion returned with the beer and the victim's dog. The two men put together some belongings and left on a train out of town that same night. The next day the victim's body was discovered. He had received multiple injuries that had caused his death.

Detectives were able to locate Sali's companion from that night, and when they interviewed him, he said that they were stopped on the way back to the camp by some police officers who made them pour out the beer. According to officials, Sali and the unknown man eventually ran into the victim, and he confronted Sali about supposedly stealing the beer. Detectives say Sali then assaulted the victim, concealed the body, and hopped a train to Amarillo, Texas with the companion. After getting to Amarillo, police say, the two split ways. Sali has a criminal record in Texas, Florida, Minnesota and Virginia and prior convictions for robbery, assault, exhibiting a weapon, resisting arrest, and carrying a concealed weapon. Sali is know to move around frequently, hopping trains for transportation. He's still on the run.
