Case Story |
|
| |
The Day Began As A Normal One |
|
| |
It was October 6, 2002, and Shawn Hornbeck's day started as the sort of Sunday that most 11-year-old boys dream of. With his two older sisters out of the house visiting friends, Shawn munched a Pop Tart for breakfast, hooked his PlayStation up to the big screen television in the living room and settled into the recliner for some high-speed video racing.
Shawn's dad normally fixed a pile of sausage and eggs for Sunday breakfast, but his job had required him to put in a lot of overtime in the past week, and he was sleeping late. Shawn Hornbeck told his mom that he was going to visit a friend -- and that's when the day turned from ordinary to horrific.
Around 1 p.m. Shawn home on his lime green mountain bike. His mom told him to be home by 5, and he promised that he would. But 5 o'clock came and went, and then 6. At 8 p.m., his mom called the police.
Despite an intensive search of the Richwoods, Missouri area by Washington County Sheriff's Department and hundreds of volunteers, there was no sign of him or the bicycle. Shawn had vanished. |

Shawn's Parents Become Activists |
|
| |
Shawn's parents, Pam and Craig Akers, have devoted their time developing the Shawn Hornbeck Foundation, a nonprofit group that offers advice and volunteers to help in the search for missing children. The foundation also sponsors child fingerprinting programs and helped develop the "Sitting with an Angel" program, which places benches featuring photos of missing children outside businesses.
