Cops: Estranged Husband Plotted Murder |
|
| |
Authorities say that Anthony Chang was the mastermind behind a plot to exact revenge on the family of his estranged wife, Wendy Hsu. Back in February 2001, cops say that a package arrived at the Hsu family residence. Inside the package, a metallic robot dog -- seemingly harmless.
What the Hsu family didn't know is that inside the robot was a pipe bomb. When 18-year-old Patrick Hsu arrived home for the weekend from college, he saw the robot and placed batteries in the toy, immediately detonating the device. Patrick was killed in the blast. Cops began asking questions and they believed that the toy was the work of Anthony Chang, Patrick's sister's estranged husband.
Currently, police believe that Chang has been hiding out for years in Venezuela. However, over the course of the investigation, they believe that Chang may have been helped by a former Milpitas engineer named David Lin. Police linked Lin to the package through a Milpitas post office.
Lin's trial is currently underway and prosecutors are trying to prove that Lin had firsthand knowledge that the package he mailed to the Hsu family not only contained a robot dog, but also a deadly bomb. Wendy Hsu testified to her rocky relationship with Chang and the fact that he vowed retaliation against her and her family if he ever left her.
Prosecutors have also provided key testimony from Chang's former girlfriend, Jenny Berrera, who is currently in a government witness protection program. In her testimony, she told the court that she watched Chang assemble the bomb in their Las Vegas apartment and that there were multiple conversations with Lin about the nature of the package.
Lin's public defender, Anthony Blank, plans to present testimony that Chang told conflicting stories about whether Lin was aware he was mailing a package containing a bomb. During opening statements, Blank told jurors that Lin is a peaceful, non-violent person who was duped by Anthony Chang.
Currently, Chang faces murder charges if he is returned to the United States. Prosecutors could seek the death penalty if Chang ever stands trial. |
