After-Hours Attack Leaves Restaurant's Pregnant Owner Dead |
|
| |
March 7, 2002, was another busy night at the Sidelines Sports Grille, outside of Atlanta, Ga. The restaurant closed up after 3:00 a.m., and owner Barbara Kriewald and her employee Terry Kirby Jr. were exhausted.
Barbara owned the restaurant with her husband, Bently Kriewald. She was a mother of two young boys, and was 7 months pregnant with a girl. Terry was a manager in training, getting ready to take over Barbara's duties when she went on maternity leave.
The co-workers were leaving an office in the back of the restaurant, headed for the front door, when a masked gunman confronted them. Investigators don't know how the gunman gained access into the restaurant, but they believe he may have been hiding somewhere in the business before it closed.
The armed intruder forced Barbara and Terry back into the office, where the restaurant's safe was located. The gunman ordered Terry to lay face down on the floor while Barbara opened the safe.
Barbara quickly emptied the evening's take into a bag. Once the attacker had the cash, police say he pulled out a length of rope and ordered Barbara to tie Terry's hands and feet. The gunman forced Barbara to tie a knot around her own ankles, then told her to lie face down next to Terry. Police say the attacker then bound Barbara's hands together. |

Terry thought that the armed robber was going to leave. The attacker had all the money, and his victims were immobilized. Terry and Barbara weren't posing any sort of threat to the armed invader and they didn't know his identity. But for some reason, police say the gunman snapped, first unleashing his anger on Barbara.
Detectives say the masked intruder used a stun gun, blasting her body with thousands of volts of electricity.
Barbara pleaded for him to stop the torture.
Police say the masked invader then raised his handgun and fired one shot at Barbara Kriewald, piercing her abdomen.
"As soon as I heard the shots, I was just laying there," Terry said, "hoping and praying that he wasn't going to shoot me."
But then the gunman turned his sights on Terry. Police say he fired another round, hitting Terry in the back. Even though the shooter hit them both at point blank range, Barbara and Terry were still alive.
The gunman left the office and walked to a nearby back door. He peered out the exit, but didn't leave. Police say the armed robber paced back and forth between the office and the back door for 12 minutes. Detectives believe he may have been waiting for a getaway driver.
The wounded couple struggled to breathe and feared that the gunman was going to shoot them again. Finally, the masked gunman walked out the back door, disappearing into the night.
Barbara and Terry desperately needed help. When they heard the back door close, Barbara finally dialed 9-1-1. Ambulances raced to the scene and rushed Barbara and Terry to the hospital.
Barbara Kriewald and her unborn child died from the gunshot wound, and while Terry Kirby Jr. survived, he has been paralyzed from the waist down. |

Detectives Hunt Clues To Find The Killer |
|
| |
Fulton County Police Detective Stephen Hewitt, who is investigating the case, said, "There's no doubt the suspect is a cold-blooded killer, someone without feeling and able to take the life of innocent people."
Detectives scoured the crime scene, searching for anything that would lead them to Barbara's killer. The most valuable clues came from a surveillance camera mounted in the kitchen area of the restaurant.
The video caught the killer's movements before and after the shooting. Investigators watched the tape over and over again, studying every physical detail of the killer's body.
They noticed that Barbara's killer appeared to be 6' to 6'3" tall, and had a very slim build. They say his shoulders are slumped forward, and he's bowlegged.
Detectives say that he moved with what they described as a "lazy walk." Cops also focused on the killer's clothing. They noticed that he wore a mask with large eye holes, and was wearing a blue vest with a small tear on the right rear shoulder area.
Detectives have spent countless hours watching video from the restaurant's other security cameras, and they believe that they may have found the biggest lead yet.
The video came from a camera set up in the bar area, recorded earlier on the day of the murder. Police say there's an individual on the video who they desperately want to identify. Detectives say the mystery man didn't play any games, eat or drink anything, and didn't talk to anyone. They say he wandered around the bar just hours before the murder, and they believe he may know something about the case.
Detectives aren't saying he's a suspect, but they would like to question him. Police believe that identifying this man could break the case wide open. |
