Cops Hunting Violent "Ghost" |
|
| |
Anibal Mustelier was known as "The Ghost." He'd show up for a job, complete the task, then disappear. Cops say his job was murder.
In 1989, federal agents say a drug kingpin in Miami hired Mustelier to kill a businessman named Frank Condom. On December 22, 1989, police say Mustelier followed Frank's car after he left a night club. They say he pulled up next to Frank's vehicle, pulled out an automatic weapon and began shooting, emptying a 30-round clip into Frank's car before speeding off. Somehow, Frank survived the hail of gunfire, suffering only minor injuries as his car skidded off the side of the road. |

Agents say Mustelier was determined to carry out the contract, so he came up with another plan. He and his crew would murder Frank by planting a car bomb. On August 17, 1990, agents say Mustelier's gang followed Frank as he drove to his mother's house. When he went inside, police say one of Mustelier's crew tried to attach the bomb under Frank's car. But he couldn't get it to stick to the car body. When Frank and his family emerged from the home and climbed into the vehicle, the Mustelier's crew detonated the device. The bomb exploded, ripping through the car. However, because it wasn't attached properly, police say, the blast was not as powerful as planned. Frank and several family members suffered serious injuries, but no one died. Once again, Musteiler's attack was thwarted.
When cops caught up with the drug lord who ordered the hit, Mustelier once again became "The Ghost", and disappeared. |

Mustelier Resurfaces |
|
| |
According to the FBI, Mustelier resurfaced in Miami in 1996. Agents say he pulled off one of the largest bank heists in south Florida history. Police say Mustelier got together a crew of criminals, and obtained safety deposit box keys for Sun Trust Bank.
On November 18, 1996, agents say two of Mustelier's men walked into the bank. Cops say a bank employee working with the gang opened the vault, where they stole approximately 8,000 pieces of jewelry, valued between $5 and $7 million.
Police believe Mustelier fled to Venezuela shortly after the robbery, but may be back in the U.S. Last year, agents say Mustelier got a Florida driver's license under the name of Emilio Suarez. He has family in Hialeah and Coral Gables, but U.S. Marshals believe he is living in the Miami area with a man named Ricardo Valdespino. |
