DNA Provides Lead for Twenty Year Old Murder Case |
|
| |
On March 30, 1982 the body of 20-year-old Mary Ann Castille was found in a Houston, Texas bayou. She was raped, strangled and left partially nude. Police had no suspects and had interviewed all of the teenager's friends, including 14-year-old Lisa Dawn Hoag. On July 1, 1982, a week after police interviewed Lisa, her body was found in a local school yard. |

For over fifteen years, the case remained unsolved. Sgt. Boyd Smith, of the Houston Homicide Division, always believed Brashar was responsible for the two murders. The only problem - he couldn't prove it. It remained a cold case until 1999 when sophisticated DNA testing came along. Sgt. Boyd Smith re-opened the case. He found that the semen sample from Mary Ann Castille's case had become tainted, but the sample in Lisa Hoag's case was usable.
The Houston PD crime lab conducted a DNA test comparing the semen evidence to Brashar's 1982 blood sample. When the test results came back, Sgt. Smith had been vindicated - Brashar's blood matched. He was their suspect. After almost 20 years, detectives believed they knew who killed Lisa Hoag and suspect he was involved in the killing of Mary Ann Castille. Sgt. Boyd Smith put out a nationwide alert to all police departments to find and arrest Michael Brashar. He didn't receive any solid leads. On March 16, 2001, Houston police filed Capital Murder charges against Michael Brashar. |
