Fugitive Larry Woods Accused Of Eluding Justice |
|
| |
When Larry W. Woods, Jr. was sentenced to 111 years in jail for killing the manager at the restaurant where he worked, police thought justice was served. But on July 9, 2001, Woods escaped from prison -- and now police need help getting this violent killer back behind bars where he belongs.
Indiana State Police say Woods escaped from the Indiana State Prison in Michigan City, Ind. in the summer of 2001. Prison officials first noted Woods' absence during a mid-morning roll call. The facility was immediately locked down, but there was no sign of Woods. Authorities think he escaped by hiding inside a garbage truck that was on a routine pickup at the prison. |

A Dirty Escape |

Prison officials say that Woods was a yard worker, which meant his duties included outdoor work like mowing the grass and shoveling snow. Authorities say that as a yard worker, Larry was within both walking and visual distance of the trash pickup area. They say he could have watched the process daily and figured out the schedule.
Police theorize that Woods got inside the dumpster so he could escape. Cops confirmed that the truck did crush the trash that morning, and it's unclear how Woods could have survived. Officials searched the dump site, but didn't find Woods' body or any evidence that he died.
Police say Woods could be hiding in a number of places in the south and the Midwest, including Michigan City, Ind., College Park, Ga., Chicago, Ill. and Cleveland or Youngstown, Ohio.
Woods is allegedly a member of the Gangster Disciples, also known as Growth and Discipline, and may have gang-related tattoos. He also might have a tattoo on the left side of his chest, with the phrases "Until Death Do Us Part" at the top, "Pooh Bird D," "Lil Larry RIP" and "6/4/99." |
