  Case Story
  A Dedicated Cop
Sherlyn Fleming protected the city of Detroit, Michigan for twenty-five years as a police officer.  After retiring she continued to fight crime by speaking to young children about the importance of staying out of trouble. Sherlyn believed that fighting crime started with teaching children to respect themselves and their community. Sherlyn's family was happy that her work as a police officer was finally over. Her mother worried about her safety constantly.  Police say Sherlyn worked on some tough cases involving undercover drug busts, but for twenty-five years Sherlyn managed to stay safe. She was never shot at once.  So when she retired, no one imagined that her life would be taken by the type of person, she fought for years to keep off the streets.

A Trip To The Dry Cleaners Turns Deadly
On February 7, 2001, Sherlyn Fleming went to the "39 Minute Indian Village Cleaners" located at 18577 Grand River Avenue in Detroit, Michigan.    Police say it was approximately 1:40 in the afternoon and Sherlyn was picking up her dry cleaning.  Police say as she was getting ready to leave a man entered the store and pointed a gun at her head.  He demanded money, but Sherlyn's cop instincts kicked in.  She pulled out her service revolver that she still carried and pointed it in the air.  But police say she wasn't quick enough. The gunman shot Sherlyn twice and then fled.  Sadly, one of the bullets struck Sherlyn in the heart. She was pronounced dead at the hospital. Ironically, a woman who fought crime for over two decades was murdered running an errand.

  Seeking Help
Witnesses told police that the gunman was dressed in a full-sleeved black puffy down jacket, black pants and black shoes.  He was also seen fleeing the scene in a burgundy-colored SUV, possibly a Cadillac Escalade.  Witness told police another person drove the SUV.   Detroit police have not been able to identify Sherlyn's killer.  Her family wants some closure and answers to why their loved one was taken from them.  Police say just a half hour before Sherlyn was gunned down in the store, there was a man talking on the payphone, just twenty-five feet from the cleaners.  Police have not been able to locate that person and would love to talk to him to see if he has any information that may help identify Sherlyn's killer.  The police say the person would have been using the pay phone outside the "39 Minute Indian Village Cleaners" on February 7, 2001 between the hours of 1:00 p.m. and 1:40 p.m.
