Case Story |

Double-Life Leads To Violence |
|
| |
Over the summer of 2000, police say that Robert Cleveland Mitchell had two girlfriends. His secret was revealed when his mistress, a woman we'll call "Jane," sent a letter to Mitchell's live-in girlfriend, who we'll call "Sally." When Jane revealed the affair between she and Mitchell, Sally kicked Mitchell out of the home they shared together.
On July 11th, 2000, Mitchell showed up on Jane's doorstep with two suitcases. Police say Mitchell asked his mistress if he could stay with her until he could find somewhere else to live. Jane allowed it. Then, police say he became cross about the letter that was sent to Sally. |

Morning Of Hell |
|
| |
The next morning, police say Mitchell made it clear that he was still very upset with Jane for sending the note. That's when authorities say Mitchell's anger turned to violence.
Police say Mitchell beat and choked Jane until she passed out. When she regained consiousness sometime later, police say Mitchell started choking her again. According to officials, he ripped open a pillow on the couch and shoved the stuffing into the woman's mouth. Police say he tied her wrists and ankles together and would not give her food, water or let her use the restroom.
Authorities say that in the early morning hours, Mitchell found a .22 caliber gun, pointed the weapon at his victim, and threatened to kill her. By 8 a.m., officer say that Mitchell had calmed down. He allegedly apologized to Jane and freed her from her bindings. Officials then say that Mitchell pulled the phone from the wall, took the victim's car keys and left to go get something from a nearby convenience store. But, the woman had a spare key hidden, and when Mitchell was out of sight, police say she got in her car and drove to the nearest neighbor's house. She phoned 911, but Mitchell was already on the run. |
