USMS: Drunken Sham Artist Kills Girlfriend |
|
| |
U.S. Marshals are on the manhunt for 58-year-old fugitive Robert Thomas Chickene, wanted for the 1985 shooting death of his girlfriend, Paula Managhan Rodriguez.
In 1984, cops say Chickene was living under an alias, Thomas Jerry Spence, and operating a "boiler room" scheme in Las Vegas. But when Chickene learned that U.S. Postal Inspectors had charged him with mail fraud, he quickly fled to Montana.
According to cops, Chickene met Paula in Missoula, Mont. where they both lived. Chickene was still living as Thomas Spence while the couple dated. Cops say their nine-month relationship was tumultuous and violent, exacerbated by Chickene's binge drinking and frequent drug use. Cops also say Chickene sold drugs.
Cops tell us that eventually, Paula learned of Chickene's true identity, and about his fraudulent schemes. According to detectives, Paula threatened to expose Chickene to police during an argument and that's when the relationship turned deadly.
In September 1984, Paula had traveled to Spokane, Wash. to visit family and friends and then returned to the Missoula home she shared with Chickene. When Paula's mom had not heard from her daughter, she called the Missoula County Sheriff's Office and reported Paula missing. On October 2, 1985, sheriff officers went to the Chickene's house and saw him cleaning the home, patching bullet holes and replacing the carpet. By the end of the month, Chickene had moved out of the home and moved in with his buddy, Robert Wayne Robinson.
On November 1, 1985, a vacationing Spokane police officer stumbled upon a body that was wrapped in a tarp and dumped in a creek just west of Missoula. When detectives arrived on the scene, they identified the body as Paula and discovered that she had been shot at least three times.
Later, detectives executed search warrants at Chickene's and Robinson's homes. The searches were covered by the local media and that is when, cops say, Chickene fled.
More than a decade later, cops in Houston, Texas arrested Chickene for domestic violence.
According to police, on February 2, 1998, Chickene assaulted his girlfriend of four years during a drunken rage. At the time, Chickene was working as a golf caddy at the River Oaks Country Club and living under the alias Allen Melvin Bell. It was only after Chickene had posted bail and was released from jail that cops discovered through fingerprints that Bell was, in fact, the fugitive Chickene.
Cops say Chickene is a member of three outlaw motorcycle gangs, including the Bandidos, the Brothers and the Gypsy Jokers. In 1972, Chickene was medically discharged from the Air Force, where he served as a special forces Para-Rescue Man, because of a deformation of his right foot and leg. Chickene's right leg is 5/8" shorter than his left leg, causing him to walk with a limp.
If you know the whereabouts of Robert Thomas Chickene, don't confront him! Cops say he is dangerous. Remember, he may be living under another alias, so take a good look at his picture, and be on the lookout for this limping bandit. |
