  Case Story
A Labor Day Massacre in Colorado
It was a scene of horror seldom seen outside of the movies and never in a town like Aurora, Colo. Police found six bodies all in one day, all with shotgun wounds. The rampage devastated the community and sent cops scrambling. In the end, one of the killers is dead, and another serving life in prison. But cops say one of the other accomplices Artur Martirosyan is still eluding justice. The motive for the rampage still remains unclear, but cops do know that on Sept. 7, 1998, Michael Martinez was out for revenge against people he considered enemies. Officials say he convinced three friends to help him: Artur Martirosyan, Alex Pogosyan and a third, unnamed individual. Cops say Martirosyan's job was to drive. He picked up Martinez and the others, then the four drove to the home of Ed Morales. Morales, 18, and his friend Zach Obert, also 18, were asleep in the basement. Cops say Martirosyan and the fourth accomplice stayed in the car, while Martinez and Pogosyan entered the house armed with 12-gauge shotguns. When they came upon Obert and Morales, police say they immediately opened fire -- never giving Obert and Morales a chance.

  Two Down; Three To Go
The day of violence was far from over. After killing Obert and Morales, police say the group split up. But Martinez and Pogosyan weren't done with their bloody rampage. They went to the home of 37-year-old Penny Bowman-Medla. Upon entering the house, cops say the two men shot and killed Medla. Then they proceeded to the basement where they found Medla's 18-year-old son, Greg , and his girlfriend, 16-year-old Marissa Avalos. They burst in, guns blazing, and shot them both to death. A neighbor had seen Martinez and Pogosyan approaching the Medla home, brazenly carrying their shotguns in plain sight. He called police, but by the time they arrived, it was too late: all that remained was the carnage. With five bodies found in an hour, police hoped that was the end of the violence. It wasn't.

  One Murderer Found Dead
This time the victim was one of their own. Later that day, cops got a call telling them where the murder weapons had been stashed. When police arrived at the area they didn't find the guns. But they did find Michael Martinez, dead from four shotgun blasts. Martirosyan and Pogosyan were later arrested. Cops say there was not enough evidence to keep Martirosyan behind bars, but Pogosyan was convicted of five counts of first-degree murder. Police now have enough evidence to charge Artur Martirosyan, but they still haven't found him.
