The World's Most Wanted Man |
|
| |
Since Usama bin Laden's face became the universal symbol of evil, he's been in hiding, protected by what's left of the Al-Qaeda terrorist network. One by one, Bin Laden's top lieutenants have been arrested or killed in a global police effort to defeat terrorism. And with each arrest comes new information to help bring the FBI one step closer to the world's most wanted man.
As further incentive to provide information on Bin Laden's whereabouts, on July 13, 2007, the U.S. government doubled the reward money to a grand total of $50 million. Sen. Kent Conrad made it clear that catching bin Laden remains a top priority for the U.S.
"Usama bin Laden remains free and continues to threaten our nation's security," he says, "This is unacceptable...it is long past the time that this terrorist be brought to justice," Sen. Conrad said.
On September 11, 2001, Usama bin Laden, the 44-year-old self-proclaimed leader of the terrorist organization Al Qaeda, stepped into the world's spotlight as the most cold-blooded mass murderer in history.
Authorities say Bin Laden masterminded one of the worst atrocities against the United States, when 19 Al-Qaeda suicide bombers hijacked three passenger planes and systematically flew them into New York City's World Trade Center and the Pentagon, just outside Washington, D.C.
A fourth hijacked jet, believed to have been earmarked for the White House or the U.S. Capitol in Washington, crashed into the Pennsylvania countryside when heroic passengers fought the hijackers for control of the plane.
In total, nearly 3,000 men, women and children were killed in a matter of minutes.
On that Tuesday morning, many Americans faced the harsh reality that the war on terror was no longer isolated incidents occurring overseas, but a life and death battle taking place in their own backyards. |

Usama bin Laden was born in Saudi Arabia, one of 52 siblings, to a multi-millionaire father.
Educated as a civil engineer, bin Laden left Saudi Arabia to actively fund the Anti-Soviet fighters in Afghanistan. But after returning home, bin Laden was banished from Saudi Arabia for his criticism of the religious establishment.
Bin Laden joined forces with the National Islamic Front in Sudan. There he found his niche, propagating his extremist interpretation of the Quran to disaffected Muslim youths, becoming almost a cult figure, who demanded unbending loyalty from his followers.
Bin Laden's hatred for the United States intensified during the 1991 Persian Gulf War. He feared that American influences were polluting Islamic culture worldwide and he often referred to the U.S. as "The Great Satan" because of its support of, what he called, the "infidel" government of Israel.
Suspected of funding the 1993 bombing of New York's World Trade Center, bin Laden's family disowned him.
Patiently over the next few years, Bin Laden melded extremist Muslim groups into his "al Qaeda" organization, training them in the art of terrorism in secret base camps, first in Sudan, then in the desert of Afghanistan.
All the while, Bin Laden, a millionaire in his own right, was amassing a fortune that would later be used to finance future terrorist operations. Authorities say as much as $10 million was raised through illicit means.
Possibly one of Bin Laden's greatest cons was tricking unsuspecting members of the U.S. Muslim community to donate their annual charity to Mosques, which were merely fronts, for Al-Qaeda. |

The Holy War Against The West |
|
| |
By 1998, Bin Laden was ready to take center stage in the world arena of madmen.
Al-Qaeda was now a powerful network of terrorist cells in dozens of countries and Bin Laden was now the "Emir" of this group of mass destruction. In 1998, Bin Laden issued a fatwa, summoning his followers to perform global jihad (holy war) against both Christianity and Judaism.
In August 1998, the U.S. Embassies in Tanzania and Kenya were bombed, killing 224 people, including 12 Americans.
That was followed by the October 2000 bombing of the USS Cole while it sat docked in Aden, Yemen, when 17 sailors died and 39 were wounded.
And, as America knows all too well, Al-Qaeda was just getting started.
