U.S. Marshals: Vincent Walters a Dope Dealing Madman |
|
| |
For the past two decades, crystal meth has become a prevalent and dangerous drug in America. And not just for its effects on the brain and heart, but also because of the violence that surrounds it.
DEA agents spend their careers trying to halt this violence, and that's why, they say, it's so important to track down Vincent Legrend Walters. They have charged him with conspiring to manufacture the drug and also with intending to distribute it - charges which on their own carry a hefty sentence. But for Walters, the story is much more nefarious.
It started back in 1988. DEA had set up undercover operations which sold the precursor chemicals for Methamphetamines. Agents say Walters was a prime customer. They say he bought $20,000.00 of precursor chemicals from an undercover DEA chemical supply company known as "Triple Neck Scientific" and negotiated for the purchase of an additional $207,000.00 in chemicals and laboratory equipment used in the manufacturing of methamphetamine. |

Walters takes prisoners in search of methamphetamine. |

One associate, Steven Barnett had became paranoid about the operation and was sure he was going to get caught. So he took two pounds of finished Meth and gave it to a guy he hardly knew - a local bag boy who was trying to get into the drug business. But the bag boy wasn't very icy either - cops say he got nervous about holding onto all of that product, so he gave it to a friend of his, Jay Bareno, to hold. Bad mistake.
On September 24th, U.S. Marshals say Barnett came looking for the bag boy and the Meth. And he wasn't the only one looking for it - Vincent Walter's bother Martin was also on the hunt. On the 25th, US Marshals say, Martin spotted a blue VW that they thought was Bareno's. It wasn't. But that didn't stop Martin Walters. Agents say Walters opened fire on the car. Fortunately, the two innocent people inside weren't hurt. But the Walters gang of thugs were still on the rampage.
U.S. Marshals say Vincent Walters and another gang member tracked down the bag boy. When he didn't have the drugs, agents say, Walters took the bag boy, his friend and his friend's girlfriend captive. Agents say they wanted to trade their hostages for the drugs.
The two boys were taken to one location, the girlfriend, Christina Reyes, was taken to another. Agents say demands were made to Jay Bareno - return the drugs or the hostages would be killed.
Bareno didn't argue. On September 28th, U.S. Marshals say the package was returned. The two boys were released alive. But Christina Reyes, an innocent victim, was not so fortunate. The hostage takers had gotten nervous. Agents say they gagged the young girl and poured a chemical, Carbon tetrachloride over the gag. The chemical is severely toxic. According to officials, the death was almost instantaneous. |

Vincent Walters Indicted |
|
| |
Agents would spend the next 15 years looking for the perpetrators of this horrible crime. Martin Walters, Vincent's brother was caught soon after the crime, tried and convicted of kidnapping and killing Reyes and for the manufacture of the drugs. He is now serving 25 to life for the murder and another 23 for the drugs.
But Vincent Walters has remained loose. On June 18, 1989 Walters was indicted on conspiracy to manufacture, possess and distribute crystal methamphetamine. He was also indicted for carryin firearms during a drug trafficking crime, and possession of unregistered firearms and explosives. Walters is also wanted by the San Diego California Police Department for the murder of Christina Reyes. But until cops can get him behind bars, this horrible incident will not be over. |
