  Case Story
Accused Gangster Killer On The Run
Los Angeles Detectives have been tracking Marvin Mercado for more than a decade now.  LAPD says Mercado is a feared member of the Asian Boyz, a violent Asian street gang in Los Angeles.  Since the early 1990's, police have connected Mercado to multiple gang-related crimes including burglary, robbery, attempted murder, and murder. When the Asian Boyz were raging out of control in 1995, L.A.P.D. said enough was enough and they created a task force to address these dangerous thugs.  Det. Larry Dolley said, "When we first started this task force we were all a little nervous about looking into thsi group because they're so violent and really don't care about your life or their own."  For months, detectives focused on the group.  They were up against cultural barriers, language issue and a strict code of silence.  Finally, their dedicated team of hard working cops were able to identify most of the members and connect them to some of the most violent unsolved crimes throughout the region.

Pool Hall Brawl Kicks Off A Series Of Shootouts
On December 3, 1993, pandemonium broke out at an L.A. pool hall.  Police say this is where a turf way began between two rival gangs, the Asian Boyz and Wah Ching.  During the brawl, which was caught on surveillance tape, the two gangs get into a serious shootout.  After studying the tape thoroughly, police said Chung Lewong Yang, who's nickname is "China Dog" attacked members of the Asian Boyz including Lea Mek, known as "Kicker." Det. Dolley said, "Kicker was armed and he made some boasts to the Wah Ching gang members.  He showed his weapon and they overpower him.  Kicker turned his back on the Wah Ching gang members and they get his gun."  On the surveillance, Asian Boyz members grab pool cues and attempt to beat rival gang members in an attempt to save "Kicker's" life. After a full scale shootout, the Asian Boyz lost the battle and "Kicker" died at the scene.  Following the shooting, police believe Mercado and his gang declare war on Wah Ching. Det. Larry Dolley and his task force believe the pool hall brawl was the beginning of a three year crime spree by the Asian Boyz. But it wasn't until 1995 when the Asian Boyz kept their vow to seek revenge, according to L.A.P.D.  Police called that summer, "Summer Madness," due to the many Asian Boyz shootout.

Gang's Crime Spree Spins Out Of Control
During an 18 month stretch between 1995 and 1996, police say they connected the Asian Boyz to a dozen murders. On May 30, 1996, officers rounded up 19 members of the Asian Boyz. However, the police didn't have enough evidence to hold two of the top leaders, Sothi Mehn and Marvin Mercado. Police finally got a break when an informant came forward in 1997 and the DA filed murder warrants for Mehn and Mercado. Sothi Mehn was captured in Phnom Penh, Cambodia on July 29, 1997 by members of the Cambodian Army. His arrest was the direct result of a tip from "America's Most Wanted". Another gang member, Sam Chan, was captured on June 9, 1998 in Utah. Chan's arrest was also the result of a tip from "America's Most Wanted".  But, Marvin Mercado was still on the loose. Police say Mercado, who's nickname is "Shy Boy" will do anything to avoid capture. Police say Mercado is known to carry automatic weapons and should be considered armed and dangerous. A good clue is a large tattoo of a dragon which covers his back.  Det. Larry Dolley said, "The dragon is a power symbol of strength and power.  The dragon is holding pearls, which stand for wisdom.  And they have an 'A' in the middle of the dragon which stands for Asian and Asian Boyz."   LAPD strongly believes Mercado is hiding out in the Philippines. They are working closely with the FBI, the State Department, and the Philippine Government in hopes of capturing Mercado.  Det. Larry Dolley has committed many years of his law enforcement career to catching up with the Asian Boyz.  Seven of the gang members have been convicted and are serving time.  However, the last remaining member is the one Det. Dolley wants now, "We'd really like your help in capturing this desperate criminals.  He's very dangerous and his gang has ruined a number of people's lives.  We'd like to get him in jail in the U.S. and let the court system do their duty on them."
