  Case Story
Murder Of A Small Town Boy With Big Dreams
Tommy Winn grew up in Pensacola, Florida.  But his heart was in Hollywood, and right after graduating from college, he moved out west to Los Angeles.  Tommy was an aspiring actor trying to make ends meet. Like many who'd chased their big screen dreams to L.A., he found work as a waiter in Hollywood. Tommy moved to a small beach community called Playa Del Ray. He was a well liked guy, with lots of friends. "Tommy was one of the most accepting people I have ever met," says one good friend, Angela Kinsey. "He would make time for everybody. So many people felt like when they were with him, they were the most important person." While Tommy was pursuing his dreams in L.A., police say 25-year-old Warren Stern was following a different path. Stern had been racking up a rap sheet with the local cops. He had just been paroled in December of 1995 after serving two years in jail.

  Dreams Shattered By Violence
Police say that on April 21, 1996, Tommy's world and Stern's world collided.  It happened when the residents of Tommy's community threw a party to celebrate several birthdays, including Tommy's. He'd just turned 25. The mood at the party turned tense when four young men drifted onto the scene, uninvited. Police say one of those men was Stern.  Partygoers told police that Stern tried to pick fights all night, and that at one point he was thrown out.  But police say Stern returned, and confronted Tommy. Witnesses say the two exchanged angry words. Then they saw Stern take off, with Tommy running after him.  Tommy's friends followed the two of them. When they caught up to Tommy in a nearby alley, he was lying on the ground, clutching his left side. He had been stabbed twice.   Paramedics arrived within minutes, but one of Tommy's stab wounds had pierced his lung. He died before reaching the hospital. Police recovered the murder weapon the next day -- a knife. Police say Stern bragged to friends about what he'd done -- and word of that bragging got back to detectives.  Police issued a murder warrant for Stern's arrest, but he was long gone.
